A Houston Amber Alert was called off on Monday when a jogger found 8-month-old Genesis Haley in some tall grass, still strapped into her car seat.
I've had some serendipitous things happen on my runs. Namely discovering surprise Dunkin' Donuts. And I called myself a hero when I stopped to help a little girl get back on her two-wheeler. But Hong Nguyen, who fortuitously changed her normal running route on Monday, really takes the cake.
"I [saw] the baby moving in the car seat so I called 911. I stayed with the baby," Nguyen said. "That’s my duty as a human being to do that."
The infant went missing late Sunday night, when the mother briefly left her alone in the car while she paid for gas. The mother, who remains unidentified, came out to every parent's worst nightmare: her car, and her sleeping baby, were both gone.
The stolen car was found about two hours later on a nearby street, but the thief had abandoned the baby. His drop-off site of choice? Some brush on the northern side of Houston.
Baby Genesis was taken to Texas Children's Hospital and treated for ant bites, but has since been released.
We're glad this story has a happy ending. And we know the mother could never anticipate her car being stolen while she paid for gas. But it's a reminder to never leave baby alone. No matter the situation, she can't fend for herself.
Do you feel there are situations when it's ok to leave baby unattended?
