Kourtney Kardashian Admits That Attachment Parenting Came Naturally To Her
Kourtney Kardashian loves being a mom to her children Mason and Penelope, and spoke out about using the controversial attachment parenting method in Redbook's April issue.
"It's what came naturally to me; I didn't plan it. When I had Mason, I just felt really attached to him and wanted to bring him everywhere. He ended up sleeping with me, and I breastfed for 14 months," Kourtney stated.
Dr. William Sears, the father of attachment parenting and writer of well-known parenting guide, The Baby Book, believes that attachment parenting involves 7 “tools:” birth bonding (close attachment with your baby after birth), breastfeeding, babywearing (carrying your baby in a sling or baby carrier), sleeping close to baby (co-sleeping), belief in the language value of your baby’s cry (responding to baby’s crying signals), beware of baby trainers (be discerning of parenting advice) and balance (keeping a balance in parenting and your relationship with your partner.)
"[Mason and Penelope] go to sleep in their rooms but end up in my bed, sometimes within minutes," the reality star said. "Mostly there are times each night when the kids are in their own rooms, and sometimes it even lasts all night. Every night is different."
Although the American Academy of Pediatrics doesn’t recommend letting babies sleep in your bed for safety reasons, advocates of attachment parenting believe it allows parents to connect further with their children.
"I mean, I have no idea where it came from because I definitely didn't sleep with my parents unless I was sick or something," Kourtney said. "I don't know, it just kind of grew. I wasn't reading attachment parenting books before; it's just what came naturally to me. I think even with different kids, it's different. Each kid needs something different. I'm sure all the family thinks I'm insane for having them in the bed and breastfeeding for a long time, but whatever."
