Ouch! A California mom gave birth to one of the largest babies born in the US in 2014. Andrew Jacob, born to Vanessa Cervantez, weighed in at 15 pounds, 2 ounces and was 24 inches long. I know what you're thinking and yes, he was delivered via emergency c-section at Desert Valley Hospital last Thursday.
The shock over baby's size was one not even mom was ready for. She said, "I couldn’t even believe it. They had to double check because I didn’t believe them; I thought the machine was broken." After his arrival, Vanessa's doctors told her that baby Andrew was the largest baby they'd ever delivered at the hospital. Vanessa added, "None of the doctors have ever delivered or heard of a baby being born that big here. My sister’s been doing research and she doesn’t think a baby weighing 15 pounds has ever been born in California."
Another honor to add to Andrew's scale-tipping resume? He's a full pound heavier than 2013's biggest baby, who weighed 14 pounds and was delivered in Utah.
Vanessa, who's 5'1" and heavyset, was expecting to deliver a big boy; she said, "My other ones have also been big," adding that her son was 10 pounds, 10 ounces and her daughter was 9 pounds, 14 ounces — but for her third to be a full five pounds heavier was definitely worrisome. After going in for a routine pregnancy stress test, her doctors discovered baby Andrew's decreased fetal movement. They decided to move quickly, getting Vanessa to a hospital and admitted in time to perform an emergency c-section.
Immediately after delivery, Andrew was flown to Loma Linda Children's Hospital because he was having trouble breathing on his own. But due to confidentiality laws, details on baby's condition won't be released.
