After over a week of voting, April the Giraffe fans didn’t land on a name for her baby, per se. They voted to leave it up to the person closest to April: her caretaker Allysa.

Over the course of the two-month livestream showcasing April’s pregnancy, Allysa became almost as beloved as April. When it came time decide on a name for the calf, Animal Adventure Park decided to let livestream viewers vote on 10 choices—one of which was ‘Allysa’s choice.’

Ultimately, viewers voted to leave it up to Allysa, and on this morning’s Good Morning America, she revealed her pick: Tajiri—’Taj’ for short.

“Tajiri is a Swahili name for both hope and confidence,” Allysa explained on a followup Facebook Live segment. “Hope is something that Tajiri has not only brought to you guys as a community globally, but it’s a hope for giraffes. We’ve been able to give giraffes a voice.”

April’s viral popularity certainly reinvigorated the dialogue about endangered animals. A chunk of the money raised by the $1 voting fee is being donated to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.
