From the sadness, a miracle was born. Survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing, Christain Williams, and his girlfriend, Caroline Reinsch, welcomed their daughter to the world, less than a year after the bombings.
Both Christian and Caroline were badly wounded during the blasts that silenced the US on April 15, 2013. The couple, who ran the race in 2012 together, were perched at the finish line cheering on a friend when the first bomb detonated. Recalling the event, Williams admits he almost died. He was knocked off his feet, sustaining serious injuries to his right hand and both of his legs. Caroline, too, was ripped from the pavement and sustained injures to her right leg as well.
Following the blasts, they were separated and taken to separate hospitals, with both undergoing multiple surgeries to mend their wounds. Chris said, "The meds weren't working and I couldn't hide from the pain." The couple, who had been trying to conceive for a year prior to the bombing, were in recovery when Caroline stunned Christian with the news.
Christian told the Boston Globe, "Any pain or suffering I felt has been replaced with joy. Discovering that I was going to be a father is how I’ll always remember the Marathon."
Nine months later, baby girl Marlowe entered the world. She was born on December 18 (just in time for Christmas!), weighing in at a reported 6 pounds and 14 ounces. Christian spoke with Today.com to tell the world, "Few people are given a chance to see how lucky they are in life. Marlowe reminds us of that."
He added, "I don't think that Caroline or I view Marlowe's conception as a miracle. But, we do think that her timing was quite miraculous. When we could have been focusing on the hardships of recovery, we instead turned our attention on our future as a family. It was just what we needed."
Thinking ahead to the future and life with baby Marlowe, Christian says that he and Caroline feel the same fears, anxieties and excitement that all first-timer parents do. Their future together and their joy outshines the grief that the two brother bombers tried to inflict on them (and America) that day. Christan and Caroline are "excited, nervous, optimistic and hopeful."
And that is the greatest revenge of all.
