How to Make Your Own 'Tree of Life' Breastfeeding Photo

Breastfeeding is beautiful. And now it's a work of art.
PUBLISHED ON 12/20/2016

The #brelfie isn’t exactly a new phenomenon. But moms have been adding artistic flare to their breastfeeding selfies recently—and you’ve probably seen these #TreeOfLife brelfies on your social media feeds. We decided to find out how to make one.

The magic behind this new trend is an app called PicsArt, a free editing tool that allows users to add filters and special effects to photos. According to an email from the PicsArt team, they didn’t initiate the breastfeeding trend, but were alerted to it after noticing a spike in downloads.

"Our social media manager caught on to the trend Friday and we sent out a note of support," Megan Harmon, Director of Content at PicsArt, tells The Bump. "We soon released a free Tree of Life sticker pack and a tutorial so moms could create their images easily. Now, more than half a million women have taken over the internet with their #treeoflife breastfeeding photos."

Want to make your own? Here’s how it works.

  1. Download and launch the PicsArt app
  2. Upload a breastfeeding image
  3. Select the ‘Sticker’ tool and select, position and resize your favorite tree image
  4. Adjust the opacity of the tree
  5. Select the ‘Magic’ tool to add a filter. ‘Midnight’ and ‘Rainbow’ are current favorites

Got that? You can also watch the tutorial below.

Take a look at some of the masterpieces moms have created, all curated on the PicsArt site.
