Busy Philipps Finally Reveals Why She Chose That Out-of-the-Box Baby Name

PUBLISHED ON 01/07/2014

Remember when Busy Philipps named her adorable baby girl Cricket? Us too. And for month's we've been trying to figure out the inspiration behind her unique choice and it seems like finally, finally, we've got it. Seems like sweet little Cricket Pearl Silverstein was named for the character she'll eventually become.

According to Busy, she and her husband Marc Silverstein had a slew of baby names on hold for their daughter's impending arrival, but when they finally met her they realized that none of them worked. She told People, "Oh my God, it was so hard because we had all these names and then she came out. I looked at her and she just couldn't be one of those names." Makes complete sense, right? Sometimes (and for some couples) it's just easier to wait to meet your baby before deciding on a name. You never know if Sam is really going to look like a Sam, or if he'll look more like a Steve instead.

So Busy and Marc waited and waited and finally, they took their daughter home. At that point, she was still nameless. Being home "bought us some time," Busy joked, but she added that after a week with their Nameless Daughter, the hospital came calling. "I got a call from Cedars and they said, 'You have to come back and name your baby.'" And in this particular instance, Busy differed to Marc. She said, "He's always coming up with character names for his movies and TV shows," so it kind of made sense that Busy would leave the choice up to her husband (especially because she hadn't come up with a name that worked).

When the now daddy-of-two suggested Cricket Pearl, Busy was interested. She said she saw a fun future for her little girl and instantly knew that they'd found the name they'd been longing for. "A lot of times," she said, "your name dictates the kind of personality you have and [Marc's] like, 'Everyone likes Cricket, Cricket is just the greatest, happiest kid on the block, the coolest camp counselor, she's hot in college. He just had this whole narrative for what that name was."

You know what's crazy (and cool)? It makes a lot of sense. You pick a name for your child because you hope to grow into that name. For instance, if you're a teacher or a social worker or a nanny or a daycare provider, you skip a lot of names because you've known really bad Michaels and Matthews and Trevors and Delilahs; and for some of us, just the recollection of how awful Nancy Hooligan was in the third grade is enough to rule out any N name ever suggested. So we pick names based on the people we've liked, loved or idolized (like the surge in the name 'Atticus' makes total sense because what's not to love and aspire toward from the To Kill a Mockingbird icon?) hoping that our kids will embody those same traits. Which makes it easier to understand where Busy and Marc were coming from. The added pressure that they already have a daughter named Birdie probably also played a factor here too.

So while Cricket is definitely a one-of-a-kind moniker we probably won't see topping the name charts this year, it work for the Philipps-Silverstein bunch. It really, really does.

How did you pick your baby's name?
