11 Year Old Helps Mom Deliver Baby, Then Goes to School
Caitlin Burke wants to be a midwife when she grows up. And at only 11 years old, the UK native has already logged some experience.
Caitlin’s mom, Tara, started having contractions early Tuesday morning just minutes after her partner left the house. But 10 minutes later, her water broke, and based on her experiences delivering her other children, she knew it wouldn’t be a long labor. So it was up to Caitlin, the eldest of five, to help deliver her new sister.
“I told Caitlin to call for an ambulance, and they were telling her what to do over the phone,” Tara tells the Birmingham Mail. “Caitlin was just amazing. I find it difficult to put into words just what she has done for me. I was screaming in pain but Caitlin was calm throughout.”
With the help of over-the-phone instructions from emergency personnel, Caitlin was able to deliver the baby, unwrap the umbilical cord from around her neck and stimulate her enough to start crying. “I was a bit scared and shakey at first because I had never seen anything like that before in my life,” Caitlin says.
Baby Elsa arrived at 7:17 a.m. — just in time for Caitlin to head to school and go normally about her day.
“My friends at school and the teachers were really happy and proud of me,” she says.
Rightfully so. What did you accomplish before sunrise today?
