If Will And Kate Have A Daughter, They’ll Call Her ‘Princess’

PUBLISHED ON 01/10/2013

Stop right there! Before you make any guesses on the gender of Prince William and Duchess Kate's royal baby-to-be, listen up:

The Queen of England issued a formal decree that if (and this is a big if here, folks! There's been no word on the gender of the royal babe) Will and Kate give birth to an heiress to the throne, her title will be 'Princess'. Up until now, the last formal decree held that a daughter to the eldest son of the Prince of Wales would be given the title "Lady."

But in a new decree signed on New Years Eve, her Majesty said, "The Queen has been pleased by Letters Patentunder the Great Seal of the Realm dated 31 December 2012 to declare that all the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales should have and enjoy the style, title and attribute of royal highness with the titular dignity of Prince or Princess prefixed to their Christian names or with such other titles of honour."

That means boy or girl, the royal babe will be given the title of Prince or Princess. And the decree goes so far as to include all of William and Kate's future children, not just their first born. So even though the two are just looking forward to welcoming their first happy, healthy future prince or princess in a few months, we can't wait for their baby brood to expand to a few more princes and princesses down the road!
