Mom Nails Breastfeeding Frustration: 'You Don't Know What's Going on Down There'
Struggling to breastfeed baby? Relax, it happens to the breast of us. Take it from this Nashville mom, Leah, who nailed all of our nursing woes in an Instagram post last week. In her now-viral photo, Leah looks defeated after trying to breastfeed her daughter, Penelope.
In her caption, Leah explains how nursing isn’t always intuitive and is chock-full of unanswered questions. “You truly don’t know what’s going on down there,” she writes. “Too much? Too little? Too intense? Not enough hindmilk? Not enough time? Plugged duct? Mastitis? WTF!!! As if it wasn’t hard enough.”
According to Leah, breastfeeding relies on much more than the biology of the breast. “It takes time, patience, support, proper nutrition, confidence and sometimes professional help to overcome your breastfeeding struggles,” she tells the Huffington Post. She adds that she found success with a lactation consultant who has helped build her confidence.
Leah also elaborates on how she’s always second-guessing herself, and offers a message of solidarity for all breastfeeding beginners: “I’m determined to tough it out. I want to do this. Mamas really do need all the support they can get. So mama, you’re hearing it from me: you’re not going crazy, it is hard, but you’re doing good. Keep going!”
Plus, as Leah concludes, “There’s a rumor going around that it gets easier.” Until that day, we’re here to make breastfeeding suck a little less, and, well, suckle a lot more with these tips.
