Kim Kardashian Stopped Breastfeeding Because of Sibling Rivalry
At 4 months old, Saint West’s breastfeeding days are over—two months shy of the AAP recommendation for how long moms should nurse. That’s the latest from Kim Kardashian, who opened up about her feeding experience on the Kocktails With Khloé series finale. And according to Kim, that decision had a lot to do with Saint’s big sister, North, who’s almost 3.
“North West stopped that for me,” Kim began when Khloé asked if she was still breastfeeding. “She would cry so much and try to pull him off of me. I was feeding him on [my left side], and she was so jealous that she took her little milk box and put it in my bra with the straw sticking out; she wanted to drink while he was drinking.”
It’s totally normal for big siblings to be jealous once baby arrives. And this jealousy often manifests itself while a mom is nursing and especially unable to be attentive. Luckily, we have tips to help everyone feel loved:
- Let your older child be a helper and bring you a water bottle, remote or phone while you breastfeed
- Try reading or singing to your big kid while you nurse
- Give a hands-off game a go: Simon Says often does the trick
- Tell your child stories about when he or she was a baby
Even if Kim did give these tricks a try, it’s too late: She says her milk is all dried up. Yet North’s recently had a change of heart:
“She said to me this weekend, ‘Mommy, I’m not mad anymore. You can feed baby brother. I won’t cry.’”
Everyone’s breastfeeding journey is different, and we’re not here to judge. We can’t all be Kourtney, after all.
