It’s all in moderation.
That’s the motto in Kourtney Kardashian’s household. Despite keeping her kids on a gluten- and dairy-free diet since last spring, Kardashian says she’s willing to bend the rules for special occasions. Just not all special occasions.
“We pick our battles and I do let the kids have popcorn at the movies and a churro at Disneyland, etc.,” Kardashian explains in a post on her app. “But for birthday parties, which can sometimes be every weekend, I bring extra gluten and dairy-free cupcakes…and they are happy with that.”
Why are Mason, 6, Penelope, 4, and Reign, 1, steering clear of gluten and dairy? Testing revealed they have sensitivities to the food groups, in addition to corn.
A gluten sensitivity, which MassGeneral Hospital explains affects 6 percent of the population, is not the same as celiac disease. The wide range of symptoms may be similar, including diarrhea, bloating, constipation, joint pain, fatigue, a foggy mind and ADHD-like behavior. But those who are just sensitive to gluten—not allergic—don’t experience the intestinal inflammation or develop the tissue transglutaminase autoantibodies associated with celiac disease.
When it comes to dairy, the different types of sensitivities can run the gamut. The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI) says that between 2 and 3 percent of children younger than age 3 are allergic to milk. Symptoms include hives, upset stomach and bloody stools (especially in infants). Lactose intolerance is a different issue also resulting in tummy troubles, like gas, bloating and diarrhea. About 25 percent of Americans are lactose intolerant, meaning their bodies don’t make enough of the digestive enzyme lactase to break down the lactose found in dairy products. While we don’t know the exact diagnosis Kardashian’s kids received, we know they seem to be doing better than ever on their new diet.
“I have noticed a great positive change in behavior with my children,” she says.
