Nearly one year ago, Nicky Hilton was packing for her Botswana safari honeymoon. Now, she’s working off a very different packing list, preparing for the arrival of her first baby—a girl—with husband James Rothschild.

“The hospital bag is packed!” she tells The Bump. “A lot of my girlfriends told me not to overpack, which is very hard for me, but I’ve managed to fit everything in one bag. I packed all of the typical must-haves, plus a robe, blanket, slippers and camera. My friend also suggested I bring my own pillow, which I think is a genius idea.”

Although the Rothschilds’ July 2015 wedding ceremony and reception was a seriously regal affair ( held at Kensington Palace in London!), Hilton is opting for a more laidback approach when it comes to raising her daughter. In fact, she says the best gifts she received at her baby shower were homemade.

“My cousin [and fellow mom to be] Brooke Wiederhorn made me the the sweetest baby album with each page dedicated to first milestones: bath, birthday, Christmas etc.—all decorated with the cutest stickers and paint,” she says, adding that Wheel of Fortune’s Vanna White, a family friend, knit the Rothschilds a baby blanket. “Gifts like these are so memorable and thoughtful.”

Hilton’s nesting instinct has been in full swing as she prepares for the arrival of her daughter, filling the nursery with girly touches and one-of-a-kind vintage finds. But Hilton says that wasn’t always her vision for the room. “Originally I wasn’t going to find out the sex, so I chose a pale blue star-print wallpaper that would work with a boy or girl,” she explains. When the parents-to-be changed their minds and found out the gender, Hilton added items with more of a feminine (and feline!) focus to her online shopping carts. “I found Madame Alexander dolls, an antique dollhouse, and the cutest crochet kitten mobile. I’ve been having a ball decorating the nursery!”

Now that Hilton’s days away from due date, she realizes her pregnancy expectations fortunately didn’t become reality. “I always thought pregnancy would be tough and scary, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised” she says. “I’ve felt great the whole time without a day of morning sickness.” Perhaps her snacks of choice have helped keep the nausea at bay; she says she’s been reaching for Ezro prenatal vitamin biscuits and dried cranberries.

With her bag packed and nursery nearly complete, Hilton is ready for her new role. “I’m enjoying this special time in my life. I’m so looking forward to motherhood!”
