This Harry Potter Face Mask Reveals the Marauder’s Map as You Breathe
Facial coverings are undoubtedly part of our new normal as the world finds its way forward during the COVID-19 pandemic. In recent weeks, many people have been showing off their creativity through their masks—including one woman from Colorado who’s designing Harry Potter-themed Marauder’s Map face masks that change as you breathe on them.
Stefanie Hook, is an artist, mom to three and US Navy reservist. She also owns and operates the Colorado Pony Express, a company that sells hand-sewn, sensory plush toys and accessories. In recent weeks, Hook also began selling facial coverings created in accordance with CDC guidelines.
Two weeks ago, she posted a video to TikTok showing a seemingly blank brown face mask, which changed to reveal the Marauder’s Map from Harry Potter as she breathed on it. The video has now gone viral, with over 432,000 likes and over 8,500 comments.
According to an interview with Insider, Hook likes to make interactive products and created the masks to “bring some magic” into the world. "I try to bring imagination to life in the creation of my products, ensuring that they are not one-dimensional items. I like to give the average person the ability to own items that are unique, and bring magic into the real world in hopes to further inspire others to create and be creative,” she told the outlet. “The video I shared was of a prototype, and I just put it together quickly to show my fans. I never imagined it would gain the following that it did.”
While the first batch of Marauder’s Map Masks has already sold out, Hook plans to make more, but in limited quantities. Though she uses simple tools to create the masks, the whole process, which she completes alone, takes her around 17 hours, Hook told Insider. Still, her goal remains to make the real word just a little more fun.
“I feel like the world can be magical and that we are not limited by the boundaries of our reality,” she said. “I will continue to push those boundaries in hopes of inspiring others and brightening people’s days.” The next batch of her Marauder’s Map face masks will be available on her website beginning May 29.
