Selena Gomez Says She Grieved Not Being Able to Carry Her Own Children
When the picture-perfect path to parenthood doesn’t align with your reality, letting go of what you once imagined can be incredibly challenging. It’s a shock, a disappointment, and a struggle that millions of hopeful parents face each year—something pop icon Selena Gomez is shedding light on.
The Only Murders in the Building star recently opened up about the difficulties she’s faced due to her medical issues and her hopes for becoming a mother. “I haven’t ever said this,” she told Vanity Fair in a cover interview, “but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”
Gomez acknowledged the profound sense of loss that can come with a different path to parenthood than expected, but also expressed optimism about her options. “It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it,” she explained. “I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. [But] I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.”
She added, “It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people. I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”
Gomez, who also stars in Emilia Pérez, has been open about her health challenges over the past decade, including her battle with Lupus, a kidney transplant in 2017, and ongoing mental health struggles. Despite these hurdles, she continues to persevere, determined to find a way forward—just as she plans to do with her journey to parenthood.
When the going gets tough, Gomez says she likes to remind herself that she is okay and ground herself for a moment. “‘Where am I? I’m sitting down in the office. Everybody that I love is out there. There’s food. I can get something to eat. I can take a nap here before I leave.’ I put myself into the present. I’m ready for it all—it’s just now I’m properly medicated,” she said with a laugh.
Our best to Gomez on her future and dreams of growing a family!
