The exceedingly unique name Arnkatla derives from an Old Norse name spelled Arnkætill and Ærnkæll. It is known in Nordic as a kenning, or compound word. The two halves of the traditional forms of Arnkatla come from ǫrn and ketill, meaning "eagle" and "kettle" or "cauldron" respectively. Knowing that on occasion "kettle" in Icelandic names has also shared the word "helmet," this name could potentially refer to an adorned helmet or simply just some sort of celebration of the eagles on the island.
