Damalis
d(a)-ma-lis
Origin:Greek
Meaning:Calf, heifer
Damalis is a feminine name once given to a town in the Roman Empire. Located near what is now the coast of Istanbul, Turkey, Damalis was a place known for the bronzed statue of a cow that stood within it. According to Greek mythology, the statue was erected when Io, a princess who had been turned into a heifer by the goddess Hera, arrived in the town. It's unsurprising, then, that Damalis means "calf" or "heifer," hinting towards the name's bovine connections! While cow statues are a less-than-common sight these days, you and little Damalis could get an up-close view of these animals on countryside road trips.
