Etsy recently released it’s year in review, which includes some of the biggest trends on the platform from 2020, as well as predictions for trends in 2021.

“It’s safe to say that 2020 was a year like no other,” Etsy Trend Expert Dayna Isom Johnson wrote in the review. “From surges in searches for new everyday essentials like face masks and DIYS to ‘cottagecore’ activities like cross-stitching and baking, shopping trends looked very different this past year. And more than ever, shoppers were looking for thoughtful items to celebrate the people they love, near and far. In fact, ‘personalized gift’ was the top searched term on Etsy in 2020.”

The platform certainly saw some unprecedented trending searches, such as wall or foldable desks (399 percent increase), murphy beds (up 159 percent) and room dividers (up 134 percent). In terms of at-home style, the platform saw a jump in searches for loose or oversized items within the clothing category (116 percent increase). For kids, searches for space-themed wallpaper was up 163 percent, while searches for space-themed kids or baby items was up 89 percent.

In terms of looking ahead, Johnson predicts that 2021 will focus on creating connections and embrace “friluftsliv”—the Norweigian concept of getting outside and connecting with nature—as the new “hygge,” the Danish concept of coziness.

Following that same trend, Etsy predicts that Color of the Year of 2021 will be sky blue—a color that represents the hope of brighter days to come and the connections we’ve made to nature this year. In fact, Etsy has already seen a 39 percent increase in searches for light or sky blue colored items.

When it comes to home and living spaces, in the new year Johnson believes shoppers will continue to make greater use of their outdoor spaces. For at-home style, she believes 2021 may show a greater spike in small accessories that dress up loungewear, such as detachable collars and comfy headbands.

For kids, Johnson predicts outer space will become a big trend. “Kids have been through a lot lately—from virtual classrooms to limited playdates—and this trend allows them to escape reality and expand their imaginations, while learning about our solar system,” she writes in the review. “Public and private space programs are also expected to have a meaningful 2021, with international space station missions planned as well as the launch of the US’s first series of missions to the moon in fifty years.”
