This Mom Is Recreating Classic Children Book Covers as Coronavirus Themes
People all across the internet are getting creative during the quarantine—including one Manhattan mom who’s turning the covers of classic children’s books into COVID-19 themes.
Stefanie Trilling, who lives within blocks of four major New York City hospitals, was looking for a way to pass the time and lighten the mood for her family as they continued to self-isolate. She turned to covers of kids’ books and turned them into something more appropriate for the outside climate—Goodnight Moom became Goodnight Zoom, How the Grinch Stole Christmas became How the Virus Stole Easter and Oh the Places You’ll Go! turned into Oh the Places You Won’t Go! Trilling came up with so many of the covers, she soon began an Instagram account dedicated to them.
“I sought a way to distract myself and my children from the constant sirens outside our window. One day, I was painting with my kids to occupy our minds, and I started copying the first thing I saw—a book we had read earlier in the day. To make coronavirus less scary, I cartoonified the virus within my painting,” Trilling told Scary Mommy in an interview. “My children loved it and it opened the channels for easier communication about our fears. Now, it’s serving as a medium for demonstrating how social distancing can bring people together and unite us around empathy.”
Trilling is calling the series “Children’s Books for Pandemics” and hopes to eventually be able to sell prints of the covers. She told the outlet, “Within the next few days, I plan to launch an initiative that will allow me to sell prints, with proceeds going to organizations that benefit those affected in different ways by COVID-19, especially children in underserved communities."
