Broaching the subject of a family illness with children is always challenging, but Kate Middleton is handling it with the same grace and patience that has earned her admiration across England for many years.

On March 22, amid widespread speculation on her condition and whereabouts, The Princess of Wales released a video opening up about her recent cancer diagnosis. The Princess noted that the couple had waited to share the news with the public until they had thoroughly explained the news to their three children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5.

“William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family,” the Princess said of her diagnosis and ongoing treatment. "As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok.”

The Princess added that she continues communicating to her children that she is “well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits." She also noted that having her children and Prince William by her side has aided in her recovery.

Several experts believe that the announcement was likely made this weekend to coincide with England’s Easter break so that the Prince and Princess of Wales may be able to shield their children from questions from schoolmates and friends as the news breaks.

The Princess of Wales closed out her video by asking for privacy for her family at this time and by recognizing those around the world, including King Charles III, who are currently battling cancer. “I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone,” she said.
