America's Most Popular Baby Names, According to the SSA's Report
A lot goes into picking a name for baby. Whether you’re looking for something in line with today’s trends or hoping to source a name that’s a little more unique, it helps to know which monikers are most popular.
Since 1997, the Social Security Administration (SSA)—an authority on American baby names—has been compiling its annual list of the most popular names parents gave their children in the previous year. Historically, the list has always been released around Mother’s Day. And, yes, the 2024 list is hot off the presses! So what are the most common names among 2024 babies?
This year—for the sixth year in a row—Olivia tops the list for girls’ names, while Liam—which first topped the charts in 2017—maintains its boy-name reign. The names largely remain the same from year to year, but there are some notable differences. For example, the girls’ name Luna has dropped off the top 10 list, replaced now by Sofia.

Meanwhile, the boys’ name Truce, meaning “peace,” saw a meteoric climb—it’s up 11,118 spots from last year’s position, and now sits at No. 991 overall.
