Viral Tweet Questions Whether Breast Milk Should Really Be Considered 'Free'
Technically speaking, yes, breast milk is free for nursing moms. But one professor is urging us all to reconsider this trite statement.
“Someone just told me she had spent roughly 4,866 hours of her life breastfeeding and that breast milk is only free if we think of women’s time, bodies, and carework as worthless.”
Kera Lovell, the author behind the tweet, raises an interesting point.
Breast milk has so many benefits for baby—it boosts the immune system, helps maintain a healthy weight and improves brain development. All that said, it ain’t easy.

Sure, mothers know all about what it takes to nurse their little, and regardless of all this, many still step up to the challenge. But let’s not belittle all they do and add “it’s free” under the column of breastfeeding benefits.
Here’s what nursing moms had to say in support of Lovell’s argument.
