Niobe as a girl's name is of Greek origin meaning "fern". In mythology, Niobe was a boastful queen of Thebes whose children were killed by Apollo and Diana as a reprimand for her arrogance. She wept continuously, and in time she turned into a stone from which water constantly streamed. Anyone with inconsolable sorrow is said to "weep the tears of Niobe".
