Origin:Hebrew
Meaning:My light
Orly is a girl’s name of Hebrew origins that means “my light.” While the name is primarily used in Hebrew-speaking parts of the worlds, it is a beautiful name for baby wherever you live. Orly is usually given to girls born around Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. At Hanukkah, Jews light eight candles over eight days to celebrate the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem during the Maccabeean revolt. This revolt took place in Judea the 2nd century BCE against Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who had forbidden Jews to practice their faith. According to the Talmud, after the Maccabees retook the Temple, they found only enough sacred oil to last one night. However, the oil miraculously lasted for eight days. Orly is a reminder of this miracle and of the triumph of liberty over tyranny.
