Thorley is a surname and boy’s name of Old English origin. A variant of Thornley, which means “thorn meadow,” there are two places of this name in England, and one on the Isle of Wight. The name most likely originated as a habitational name for someone from one of these places. Though rarely used as a first name, it was borne by English actor Thorley Walters and politician Thorley Smith. The latter was Britain’s first Parliamentary candidate to stand on a platform of women’s suffrage. Working alongside famous suffragists such as Emmeline Pankhurst and Eva Gore-Booth to obtain votes for women, he makes a worthy namesake for baby!
