Train Stations Are Getting a Lot More Breastfeeding Friendly
Slowly but surely, nursing and pumping in public places is getting more comfortable. And it’s largely thanks to a company called Mamava, whose lactation pods you may recognize from airports across the country. Now, Mamava is making its train station debut, coming to Amtrak locations in DC, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chicago and New York.
The initiative is Amtrak’s response to a petition from two Philadelphia moms for clean and safe pumping locations at train stations. In addition to privacy, the freestanding booths offer comfortable, cushioned seating, and include outlets and a fold-down table for a breast pump.
“These new lactation suites demonstrate Amtrak’s ongoing commitment to better accommodate the needs of our customers and their families while traveling with us,” David Handera, Amtrak’s vice president of stations, facilities, properties and accessibilities, said in a statement. “It is important for Amtrak to provide mothers with a secure, clean, dignified and private space.”
Four of the stations will receive their Mamava installation this summer: Washington, DC’s Union Station, Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station, Baltimore’s Penn Station and Chicago’s Union Station. New York City’s Penn Station is on track to receive a Mamava this fall.
