Moana 2 Is Coming to Theatres This Fall, Disney Reveals
Eight years after its debut enamored fans all over the world, Disney has finally opened up about the full-length sequel for Moana. During an earnings call on February 7, Disney CEO Bob Iger outlined Walt Disney Studios’ plans for the next several years, including this year’s Moana release.
“This was originally developed as a series, but we were impressed with what we saw, and we knew it deserved a theatrical release,” Iger said in a press release. “The original Moana film from 2016 recently crossed 1 billion hours streamed on Disney+ and was the most streamed movie of 2023 on any platform in the U.S.”
“Along with the live-action version of the original film that’s currently in development, Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise, and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November.”
According to a synopsis, Moana 2 “takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
Disney shared a seconds-long video preview on February 8. In it, a grown Moana stands one foot in the water and one on an unknown island with her oar and boat behind her as she sounds her giant conch.
Fan excitedly responded to the video with in anticipation of the new release. “Ahhhh I Didn’t See This Coming OMG,” wrote mom blogger and the Papya Podcast host Sarah Landry. “Were you guys hiding this in the deep dark depths of the ocean somewhere?!” added influencer Maxwell Gill. “I think this actually cured something in me,” joked another commentator.
Moana 2 is currently set for a Thanksgiving Day release on November 27, 2024, almost a year before the live-action Moana movie featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson—reprising his role as Maui—will debut.
We can’t wait to dive into more Moana this year and next!
