Whether you’re gearing up for your toddler’s first day of Pre-K or getting your little one settled into their first elementary classroom, it doesn’t take long to realize that the little things—from backpacks and lunchboxes to craft supplies and first-day outfits—can really add up. And if you feel like back-to-school shopping is more expensive than it used to be, you’re not imagining it.

A new report by NerdWallet found that parents are now shelling out an average of $741 on their child’s back-to-school needs. That’s a staggering $200 increase from last year. Polling more than 600 parents of kids K-12 nationwide, the survey revealed that 56% say the season puts real financial strain on their families.

While a child’s age and school system certainly impact back-to-school expenses, many admit to leaning on credit to get through the season. More than 60% of parents say they’ll use credit cards for their purchases, and more than half (53%) admit they’d go into debt to cover extracurriculars. Forty-six percent would even do the same for clothing and supplies if it helped their child “fit in.”

Parents aren’t giving up on savings, though. Over half (52%) plan to shop during sales, a third (34%) will use coupons, and nearly as many (31%) are cutting back by only buying what schools specifically require. New tariffs are also shifting shopping habits, with 39% planning to switch brands and 35% looking to new retailers to avoid sticker shock. Others say they’re cutting back altogether on clothing (27%) and supplies (25%).
