TSA Opens New Dedicated Lanes for Families Traveling with Children
Flying with kids isn’t for the faint of heart. Between soothing a fussy baby, managing tired toddler legs and juggling multiple bags, a long security line can be the tipping point between a smooth trip and a total meltdown.
But relief may be on the way. Last week, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced the launch of a new Transportation Security Administration (TSA) initiative called “Families on the Fly,” which will create dedicated security lanes for families traveling with children.
The new lanes dedicated to families have already launched at Orlando International Airport—where many families head to and from Disney World—and at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. Next up are John Wayne Orange County Airport (SNA) and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, with additional airports like Charleston International, Jacksonville International and Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport expected to follow in the coming months.
To give families even more options, the new initiative will also offer families $15 off TSA Pre-Check applications, reducing the cost from $78 to $63 per person for a five-year membership. For Gold Star families (those who have lost an immediate family member as a result of active-duty military service), enrollment will be free.
“DHS and TSA are committed to making the airport security experience as smooth and stress-free as possible for traveling families,” said Senior Official Performing the Duties of Deputy TSA Administrator Adam Stahl. “The Families on the Fly campaign, being rolled out at select airports, aims to mitigate the unique challenges families face when traveling and minimize stress while maintaining the highest level of security.”
In addition to dedicated lanes for families, the Department of Homeland Security rolled out its “Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease” campaign earlier this summer to provide military members and their families with dedicated screening lanes or front-of-line privileges.
