In a nutshell:
Based on feedback from our pregnant product testers, survey feedback from more than 700 moms in The Bump community and three board-certified dermatologists, we chose Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Massage Lotion as the overall best stretch mark cream for pregnancy based on its hydrating formula at an economical price point. We also chose The Honest Company Glow On Body Oil as the overall best belly oil due to its easy application and natural ingredients, and Burt’s Bees Mama Bee Belly Butter as the overall best belly butter for its rich texture and soothing performance.

As an expectant first-time mom, I’m experiencing firsthand the many changes your body undergoes during pregnancy. Of course, one of the most outwardly visible changes is your growing belly, and for many people, stretch marks—those red or purple lines that eventually fade to white or silver scars—are a common side effect of rapidly expanding skin. “Stretch marks begin to appear when the body expands at a faster rate than the skin can grow,” says Dendy Engelman, MD, a dermatologist in New York City. “When someone sees a rapid weight gain, their body attempts to repair the deep layers of damaged skin. However, during that restoration period, the texture might come back as raised or indented, therefore emerging as a scar.”

You can’t completely prevent stretch marks, as genetics play a big role in their development—but “adding a moisturizer to your routine earlier in pregnancy can help soften skin as it stretches,” explains Joyce Teng, MD, a dermatologist and director of pediatric dermatology at Stanford Medical School. That’s where pregnancy stretch mark creams, belly butters and oils come in handy.

But which one to choose? I, along with a panel of independent product testers, used a range of popular products to find out which are the best stretch mark creams, oils and belly butters for pregnancy based on specific individual needs.

How We Tested and Chose the Best Stretch Mark Creams

Image: Olivia R., Emily C., Juanita M.

The Bump editors conducted extensive research to identify the leading stretch mark creams, oils, and butters on the market, and which are best formulated to meet specific needs of women during pregnancy. Of those, we chose a shortlist of 24 products to test. From there:

  • We enlisted 19 pregnant parents-to-be (including me!), in different stages of pregnancy and with a range of skin types, to thoroughly test the leading options on the market. We carefully matched creams with testers based on product claims and individual needs—so to gauge how well a product relieves itchiness, we had an expectant mom with itchy skin test it out; to assess how benign a product’s smell is, we selected a pregnant tester who’s sensitive to scent, etc.
  • To test, I applied one product twice a day, after a morning shower and before bed, on damp to dry skin for at least a week.
  • After using the stretch mark products, the other product testers and I provided qualitative and quantitative feedback on the products’ ease of use, effectiveness, fragrance, ingredients, style and design and value for money.
  • Because stretch marks are personal, we conducted two surveys of more than 700 new and expectant moms in The Bump community to get their honest feedback on stretch mark creams they’ve personally used.
  • We interviewed five board-certified dermatologists to better understand how stretch mark creams work and get their advice on what to look for and avoid in topical treatments.
  • We consulted guidelines from the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) and read relevant medical studies on why stretch marks appear and effective ways to treat them.
  • Because everyone’s experience is different, we scoured forums and message boards and read customer reviews to find out how these stretch mark creams, oils, and butters performed for parents across the country.

Editorial integrity is at the heart of everything we publish. Read more about how The Bump develops our product reviews.

Overall best stretch mark cream

Palmer's Cocoa Butter Massage Lotion for Stretch Marks

What We Love
  • Moisturizing but not greasy, according to our survey respondents
  • Excellent value
  • Easy to apply
Things To Consider
  • Lingering scent
  • Lengthy ingredient list

Palmer's Cocoa Butter Massage Lotion for Stretch Marks has been a mom favorite for decades and a winner among The Bump product testers for years. The company has been around since 1840, and over the years, countless parents have used and approved this highly popular stretch mark cream. In fact, more than a third of our survey respondents told us that they turned to this brand for a reliable, effective stretch mark cream during their pregnancies. Small wonder it’s won a Best of The Bump award for overall best stretch mark cream for three years running. (See all of this year’s Best of The Bump winners.)

An overwhelming majority of our survey respondents—more than 80 percent, in fact—flagged “easy to rub in” as a vital quality in a stretch mark product. And our product tester, Emily C., who used this pregnancy stretch mark cream at 25 weeks pregnant, gave it a 10 out of 10 across all categories, including ease of use. She says, “It was the perfect texture, not too thick but not too thin and oily.” Emily loves that “it rubbed right in and didn’t feel sticky or gross after. It definitely helps keep your skin moisturized!” MDmomma1217, a parent from The Bump community forums, is also a fan of the hydrating consistency. “I use it all over my stomach and chest and feel like it's thick enough to keep the itching away for a long time,” she shares. And Carrie, an expectant mom from our survey, tells us she doesn’t get a heavy or sticky feel from Palmer’s. I also tested this cream, and I loved that it soothed my consistently itchy skin and was easy to dispense from the traditional pump bottle. It never left a greasy residue or stained my clothing.

Image: Emily C.

This lotion for stretch marks also earned a perfect score for effectiveness. Many moms love how the cream can be counted on to minimize existing stretch marks, and Emily wholeheartedly agrees. “I already had stretch marks from previous pregnancies but this product definitely made a difference while I was using it,” she raves. “It keeps your skin moisturized and feeling great.” Perhaps best of all, that great performance comes at a reasonable price. Ringing in at just $1.72 per fluid ounce, this lotion was the most affordable option we tested by a long shot.

While the lotion is free from added fragrances, it’s worth noting that the cocoa butter has a natural chocolatey scent that lingers, which could be offputing to those who are scent-sensitive. That said, many expectant moms seem to be fans of Palmer’s scent. “The smell is simple and not overwhelming,” Emily reports. Survey respondent Brittany also listed the warm cocoa butter scent as a big positive of using this cream.

Queen bees and expectant mothers have a lot in common: You’re both incredibly important and take care of high-level matters for the hive. That’s why you deserve some honey at the end of the day—and a Best of The Bump winner like Burt’s Bees Mama Bee Belly Butter is sure to bring it. According to our tester, Meredith, her skin “felt great after only a few uses” of this shea- and vitamin E-infused body butter, earning it a 10 out of 10 for effectiveness.

One of the active ingredients in this stretch mark product is the natural fat from the fruit of the karite tree, more commonly known as shea butter. With its high level of fatty acids, shea butter is an emollient, softening and hydrating your skin and sealing in moisture. It also brings anti-inflammatory properties helping, your skin accommodate the itching that can come with each trimester. It certainly did for Meredith, who tells us, “My skin is noticeably less itchy” after using it. Expectant mom and survey respondent Claire* praises the butter’s cooling sensation on her itchy skin, adding that it “hydrates very well.”

Applying the Mama Bee Belly Butter is a piece of cake, which isn’t always the case with belly butters. In fact, when Meredith compared this to products she’s used in the past, she appreciated how simple this product was to put on, rating it a 10 out of 10 for ease of use. “The package opened easily and the product wasn’t goopy, so it’s easy to apply,” she says. Meredith also appreciates that this product was truly fragrance-free, making it an excellent choice for expectant women who are scent-sensitive.

To top things off, at $2 per ounce, this belly butter has one of the lowest price tags of all the products on our list. “I’d say it’s good value,” says Meredith, who gave it yet another 10 out of 10 category score. Belli Stretch Mark Minimizing Cream
Image: Amazon
What We Love
  • EWG-verified
  • Only seven naturally-derived ingredients
  • Luxe packaging
Things To Consider
  • High price point
  • Light rose scent

Almost a third of respondents to our survey were concerned about a powerful added scent in their stretch mark product, and it’s no wonder—a heightened sense of smell is a common pregnancy symptom (in fact, it’s one of the earliest signs of pregnancy!). This can be frustrating when shopping for skin care, as many creams and lotions tend to be lightly fragranced. But that’s not an issue with the Belli Stretch Mark Minimizing Cream. This two-time Best of The Bump winner is a must-have for expectant people who are having trouble with smells during pregnancy.

Diana, our product tester, is highly sensitive to odors, and she was a big fan of this stretch mark cream’s “very clean,” barely-detectable scent, which she says didn’t linger on her skin—so it’s no surprise she rated it a 10 out of 10 in this category. The cream is also highly effective. “I like the texture of it, the way it soaked into my skin nicely and how it left no residue,” says Diana, adding, “I haven’t had any new stretch marks, so that’s a win for me.”

Image: Shelby G.

If you’re drawn to visually appealing packaging, the Belli Stretch Mark Minimizing Cream may not be your first choice. However, the squeeze tube received praise from Diana. She preferred it to tub containers that require unscrewing a lid and scooping. All in all, this pregnancy stretch mark cream is an excellent choice for a belly that needs hydration and a nose that needs relief.

Product type: Cream | Quantity: 6.5 fl. oz. | Price per fl. oz. $4.46 | Notable ingredients: Glycerin, vitamin E, caffeine, avocado oil, ginseng extract

Our product tester says:

Best stretch mark product for sensitive skin

Ingrid + Isabel The Oil
Image: Ingrid + Isabel
What We Love
  • EWG-verified
  • Only seven naturally-derived ingredients
  • Luxe packaging
Things To Consider
  • High price point
  • Light rose scent

If you have sensitive skin, chances are you pay particular attention to your products’ ingredient lists. Our tester, Shelby, who suffers from eczema, needed a product that would be effective while staying gentle on her skin. The Oil, our Best of the Bump winner for best stretch mark product for sensitive skin, is an EWG-verified belly oil that contains only seven ingredients. “That alone speaks volumes,” says Shelby. “The skin is the largest organ on the human body. It absorbs everything we put on it. Being ‘picky’ with products, especially during pregnancy, is crucial to the health of not only mama but her baby. I'm so happy to have found this oil and be confident in the safety of its ingredients.”

Among those seven ingredients are chamomile, lavender and marshmallow root, all of which are naturally derived. According to Michele Green, MD, a cosmetic dermatologist in New York City, marshmallow root is a particularly good choice, as the high mucilage content “may have anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce redness and inflammation.” It proved to be an effective formula for Shelby, who says the oil left her skin feeling soft, moisturized and less itchy, all without irritating her eczema-prone skin.

Image: Shelby G.

Shelby says that applying the oil felt “like a little spa moment” and gave the attractive product packaging high marks. It’s easy to dispense the right amount of oil without making a mess, and the glass bottle is so “aesthetically pleasing” that according to Shelby, she intentionally left it out on the bathroom counter.

The Oil isn’t one of the cheaper products we tested, but after using it, Shelby tells us this belly oil is definitely worth the price point. “If I walked into a store like Ulta or Sephora and saw this product on the shelf, I would guess its price was higher than what it is,” she shares. Needless to say, if you’re after a belly oil that will soothe sore, dry patches while offering the experience of a top-of-the-line skin care product, this is a perfect match.

Product type: Oil | Quantity: 4 fl. oz. | Price per fl. oz. $8.75 | Notable ingredients: Apricot kernel oil, marshmallow root, calendula flower, rosehip, lavender flower, chamomile flower, rose absolute

Our product tester says:
“I have eczema-prone skin, which unfortunately has left my bump covered in patches. This oil is gentle enough to provide moisture and calm my itchiness without aggravating my flare-ups.”

Best stretch mark product for dry skin

8 Sheep Organics True Belly Serum
Image: Kindred Bravely
What We Love
  • Contains centella and hyaluronic acid
  • Absorbs quickly and deeply
  • Unique serum formula
Things To Consider
  • Most expensive product on our list
  • Our tester didn’t love the scent, though it dissipates quickly

If you’re battling dry skin during pregnancy (a common but uncomfortable symptom), a serum may be a good choice, as this type of stretch mark product tends to absorb into the skin more deeply than a cream or oil. Our tester Olivia, who has dry, itchy skin, loved the 8 Sheep Organics True Belly Serum, our Best of The Bump winner for best stretch mark product for dry skin. “It felt soothing instantly and soaked right into my dry skin,” she says.

Image: Olivia W.

The ingredients are clean and simple, including centella and hyaluronic acid, both of which are recommended for preventing stretch marks by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). Plus, according to Cleveland Clinic, centella “does a great job keeping skin hydrated” and helps your skin barrier retain moisture, making it a perfect option for treating dry skin. The same goes for hyaluronic acid, which can help improve your skin’s elasticity and is particularly good for targeting dryness. This serum “felt very hydrating, moisturizing and calming on my belly,” Olivia confirms. “It rubs right in, isn't sticky and doesn't leave any residue.”

It comes in a modern, sleek bottle and is dispensed with a dropper, which is easy to use. Olivia says she usually needed two full droppers to cover her belly, though she contends that a single bottle would last well past nine months, and she plans to continue using the serum postpartum.

Product type: Serum | Quantity: 4 fl. oz. | Price per fl. oz. $11.75 | Notable ingredients: Centella, hyaluronic acid, avocado oil, vitamin E

Our product tester says:
“I would recommend the 8 Sheep True Belly Serum to anyone dealing with dry, itchy skin during their pregnancy. For me, as my belly has grown, I have gotten drier and itchier, and this product really soothed and hydrated my skin.”

Best budget-friendly stretch mark oil

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Skin Therapy Oil
Image: Walmart
What We Love
  • Excellent value
  • Quick-drying
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Convenient pump
Things To Consider
  • Stronger fragrance than some
  • Lengthy ingredient list

Nearly half of our survey respondents said price was important when choosing a stretch mark product. Unfortunately, belly oils aren’t known for their affordability. But Palmer’s delivers with its Cocoa Butter Skin Therapy Oil. This spray-on oil is budget-friendly without sacrificing quality. Created by the same company as the well-loved stretch mark lotion, Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Skin Therapy Oil is our Best of The Bump winner for best budget-friendly stretch mark oil two years running. The lightweight belly oil is stacked with antioxidant-rich and deeply-hydrating ingredients like vitamin E, argan oil and cocoa butter. Together, they work to soften skin, improve the appearance of stretch marks and stimulate cell rejuvenation. With all of those positives, you may expect this option to come at a high price point—but you’d be pleasantly surprised that at just over $2 per fl. oz., it’s by far the most affordable oil on our list.

Juanita, our product tester, was thoroughly impressed with Palmer’s oil. She gave it a 10 out of 10 for effectiveness. The moisturizing and skin-smoothing perks were a fast favorite: “My skin felt good,” she reports. “It helped with the dry areas on my belly. It really keeps [skin] smooth for a long time.” Survey respondent Shawna agrees, saying that the spray-on oil “leaves my skin smooth and glowing.”

Image: Juanita M.

A big point in this oil’s favor is that it’s quick-drying. Many oils are, well, oily and can take a while to soak in, causing potential staining or greasiness. The spray nozzle limits the amount of product dispensed, which Juanita was a fan of, rating it a 10 out of 10 for ease of use. Survey respondent Ashley also loved how quickly this oil goes to work, noting, “I loved how easy this melted into my skin.”

Another aspect to consider is the belly oil’s scent, which is similar to Palmer’s pregnancy stretch mark cream. Juanita praises its “soothing, calm scent.” However, it’s worth noting that this may not be the best choice for moms-to-be who prefer fragrance-free formulas. Still, Juanita says she would recommend this product to other expectant mamas, just as it was recommended to her. “My sister-in-law used it all through her pregnancy and even after,” she says. “It’s helped her a lot!”

Product type: Belly oil | Quantity: 5.1 fl. oz. | Price per fl. oz. $2.16 | Notable ingredients: Canola oil, sesame oil, vitamin E, argan oil, cocoa butter

Our product tester says:
“It helped with the dry areas on my belly. It really keeps it smooth for a long period of time.”

Our community says:

Best stretch mark product for fading

Bio-Oil Skincare Oil
Image: Walmart
What We Love
  • Tester found it reduced color of stretch marks
  • Clinically shown to fade stretch marks
  • Easy to apply
Things To Consider
  • Can be greasy
  • Contains mineral oil

Bio-Oil Skincare Oil has been a cult favorite in the skin care world for years, and it’s held a Best of The Bump award as the best belly oil for fading stretch marks for two years running. The formula was developed by a chemist to supplement skin’s natural oil production to soothe itchy skin and improve the appearance of stretch marks over time. As a result, it’s a great option for expectant moms hoping to fade existing scar tissue while preventing more from forming.

Bio-Oil’s clinical studies found that the product improves the appearance of stretch marks. After two weeks, 95 percent of test subjects showed improvement, and after eight weeks, that percentage jumped to 100 percent. Engelman can also speak to the products’ success: “I personally used it throughout both of my pregnancies and found it to be a lifesaver when I was in need of deep moisturization and minimizing the appearance of stretch marks,” she says.

Image: Ivy D.

Ivy, our product tester, also praises Bio-Oil’s performance, awarding it a 10 out of 10 for effectiveness. “I applied this at night and noticed that my skin was noticeably smoother and softer in the morning,” she gushes. It also relieved itchiness. “I even tried using it as a spot treatment on itchy spots and it helped reduce itching in those areas immediately,” she shares. Nina*, an expectant mom who responded to our survey, agrees that it was effective in soothing skin and reducing scar tissue. “I like the way it feels, and it has helped reduce the color of my stretch marks,” she tells us.

Due to its thin consistency, Bio-Oil takes a little effort to sink into the skin, and a little goes a long way. Ivy tells us that she rubs it in at night for this reason, but apart from that, she found application easy. Ivy particularly liked the user-friendly bottle, which dispenses the right amount of oil without making a mess. Maria, who completed our survey, also praises Bio-Oil for its lightweight feel and how easy it is to rub in, a feature many of our survey-takers raved about. “It doesn’t stain your clothing,” she tells us.

Bio-Oil is made from nourishing plant oils, which “provide essential moisture to the skin barrier and also support skin elasticity,” explains Engelman. Because it contains rosemary oil and retinyl palmitate (a vitamin A derivative), there’s some discussion in online forums about whether this oil is pregnancy-safe. Engelman reassures expectant moms that it is. “Bio-Oil has been evaluated by qualified toxicologists and is deemed safe for pregnant and lactating women,” she states. Moreover, she explains that the very low concentrations of these ingredients in Bio-Oil should not be cause for concern. In fact, “there is no scientific evidence to prove any negative effects of retinyl palmitate in Bio-Oil during pregnancy,” she says. While Engelman strongly recommends that pregnant women avoid products with moderate to high amounts of rosemary oil, Bio-Oil doesn’t fall into this category. That said, if you’re concerned with the ingredients, the brand offers a “natural” option made without vitamin A.

If you have any reservations, Engelman suggests performing a patch test on your arm before using the oil on a large or sensitive area of skin. And of course, you can also use it post-pregnancy, as Ivy notes. “I will enjoy using this the rest of my pregnancy for sure and will find other ways to use it once my pregnancy is over,” she raves.

Product type: Oil | Quantity: 4.2 fl. oz. | Price per fl. oz. $5.47 | Notable ingredients: Mineral oil, vitamin E, vitamin A palmitate, calendula, jojoba oil

Our product tester says:
“It has helped to keep my belly nice and hydrated and helped a bunch with itchiness. Plus, it feels luxurious to apply.”

Our community says:

I have no stretch marks and believe it's because of my early start and consistent use of the oil. – Kristina, expectant mom and The Bump survey respondent

Types of Stretch Mark Products

Topical stretch mark treatments can be divided into three main categories: belly butters, body oils and creams/lotions. The formula you choose is a matter of personal preference, and some products can be used together to lock in moisture.

  • Stretch mark cream/lotion. Stretch mark lotions are liquid creams specifically designed to reduce the appearance of scars. “Lotions are usually water-based, meaning they’re effective for smoothing skin and relieving inflammation, especially for those with skin conditions like eczema,” says Engelman. This is a popular type of stretch mark product, with 62 percent of our survey respondents sharing that they use belly creams and lotions.
  • Belly oil. Body oils that are designed specifically for pregnancy, sometimes known as belly oils, are another good option. They’re also the most popular type of stretch mark product among our survey respondents, used by almost two-thirds of expectant moms in our community. Oils regulate the production of sebum (lipids that help moisturize your body), and the liquid formula sinks into the skin, locking in moisture and improving the skin-cell barrier, explains Engelman. Green adds that “oils tend to remain on the skin’s surface, acting as occlusives that lock in moisture and create a protective barrier. While creams deliver immediate hydration, oils excel at preventing water loss and maintaining the skin barrier.” An oil is also a lovely way to incorporate body massage into your daily routine, helping to boost circulation and collagen production. If you choose to layer stretch mark treatments, always apply body oils as the last step on top of the cream.
  • Belly butter. Body butter is a thick, deeply moisturizing balm. While it’s not the most common stretch mark product (fewer than 40 percent of our survey respondents said they use belly butters), it works well for dry or rough skin because it’s intensely hydrating. It’s often made from a blend of naturally derived shea, cocoa or mango butters. These ingredients are rich in vitamins and fatty acids, which form a protective layer over the skin and ease the itchy, tight feeling some women experience during pregnancy. One possible downside? Natural butters can feel a little greasy on the skin. According to Green, these products can outperform oils when it comes to alleviating dry, itchy skin, “primarily due to their unique formulations that combine water and oil-based ingredients,” creating a protective barrier that helps to retain moisture for longer.

What to Look for in a Pregnancy Stretch Mark Cream

There are a lot of lotions and potions out there that make big promises. However, these are the hero ingredients to look for:

  • Centella. Teng notes that “products with centella asiatica work to brighten skin, which also helps improve the appearance of stretch marks.” The AAD also points to research that says products containing this herb may help prevent stretch marks.
  • Hyaluronic acid. This highly popular, water-loving molecule occurs naturally in the body and is considered safe during pregnancy. The AAD cites two large studies that found that applying hyaluronic acid to early stretch marks made them less noticeable. According to Green, “Common skin barrier-supporting ingredients include hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides. Hyaluronic acid and glycerin are two humectants that pull water from the environment to the skin’s surface.”
  • Rosehip oil. Teng says that products containing nourishing natural ingredients are usually a safe bet. “Rosehip oil is rich in antioxidants that target oxidative damage,” she explains.
  • Colloidal oats. “Oatmeal and colloidal oats are among the most effective, pregnancy-safe ingredients for alleviating itchy skin, making them a safe and effective choice during pregnancy,” Green says. “These natural components work wonders by not only relieving itchiness and skin irritation but also providing a protective barrier that locks in moisture. This dual action helps to keep the skin hydrated and comfortable, promoting overall skin health and well-being.”
  • Marshmallow root. “Marshmallow root is thought to help relieve itchy skin due to its high mucilage content, which acts as a hydrating emollient,” Green tells us. “This creates a protective barrier that helps prevent moisture loss.”
  • Aloe vera. You may be more familiar with this ingredient as a miracle-worker for sunburns—and the same anti-inflammatory qualities that create relief when you get too much sun can help here too. Plus, according to Green, “Aloe vera, which is rich in water and other humectants, helps to hydrate the skin.”
  • Glycolic acid. Richard Bottiglione MD, a dermatologist based in Phoenix, Arizona, says, “Glycolic acid is safe for pregnancy. [It] can help cell turnover, which helps the skin regenerate itself and can help reduce stretch marks if applied regularly.”
  • Green tea. This familiar ingredient is as good for you when it’s applied topically as when it’s brewed into a frothy latte. “Green tea is an excellent soothing ingredient in a moisturizer due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties,” says Green.

Ingredients to Avoid in a Stretch Mark Cream for Pregnancy

As you shop, be sure to check the ingredients list to see if a stretch mark cream includes irritants or harmful chemicals—especially if you have sensitive skin. Regardless of your skin type, here are a few ingredients that all expectant moms should steer clear of:

  • Retinoids. Although present in many skin care products, retinoids aren’t safe for pregnant or breastfeeding moms. Engelman says it’s important to “avoid vitamin A derivatives like retinol while pregnant, as they can harm the fetus.” You’ll want to seek out pregnancy-safe alternatives.
  • Parabens. Engelman warns against using products with parabens that contain preservatives, as these chemicals have been linked to breast cancer and reproductive health issues.
  • Phthalates. Phthalates should also be avoided during pregnancy, as they may disrupt fetal growth, have an adverse effect on reproductive health and increase the risk of miscarriage or preterm birth.
  • Artificial fragrance. Products with strong fragrances can irritate sensitive skin and also trigger nausea or vomiting in moms who experience scent aversions in pregnancy. With that in mind, you may want to opt for a stretch mark cream without perfumes or artificial fragrances. According to Green, “Ingredients such as alcohol, fragrances and sulfates are common irritants within skin care products. Prioritizing gentle, nourishing formulations will help achieve healthier, more hydrated skin.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Do pregnancy stretch mark creams really work?

This is a common question among pregnant moms looking to prevent or fade existing stretch marks. While the guidelines we consulted from the AAD offer ways to prevent stretch marks, they also note that once they occur, stretch marks are permanent. That said, a topical treatment may make them less noticeable and can also help reduce any itchiness. “Frequent skin massaging and emollients may improve skin elasticity and be beneficial,” says Teng. Moreover, a good stretch mark cream will strengthen your body’s natural defenses by boosting circulation, building collagen and smoothing your skin. Diet and lifestyle also play a role in the development of stretch marks. “Staying hydrated is key,” explains Engelman, as drinking plenty of water enhances your skin’s natural elasticity.

While stretch mark creams are the best option for moms-to-be, post-pregnancy treatments like laser therapy and microdermabrasion can also help to minimize scarring, if needed. “Laser therapy helps stimulate collagen production to fill stretch marks with little downtime,” says Engelman. “Another option is microdermabrasion, a procedure that uses a tool with an abrasive surface to exfoliate the top layer of the skin.” If you’re unhappy with the stubborn appearance of stretch marks after baby, speak to your doctor or dermatologist about these more extensive options.

When should I start using a stretch mark cream?

Want to try to stave off stretch marks? Your best bet is to start using a pregnancy stretch mark cream in the first trimester. “Start as soon as possible! The earlier you get ahead of the damage, the better your chances are for minimal scarring,” says Engelman. Consistency is key, so for best results, several of our experts recommended using stretch mark cream once or twice a day.

How should I apply stretch mark cream?

Engelman says to massage products into your skin with gentle sweeping motions to circulate blood flow. Moist skin is better at absorbing emollients, so Teng recommends applying lotions and oils after bathing. If you plan to layer different types of products, consider how each formula will work together. If you take this approach, Teng says to “start with the lighter cream then follow with an oil-based product to help lock in moisture.”

Is it safe to use retinol-based stretch mark cream after birth?

As we mentioned previously, retinoids are not safe to use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. However, retinol products can be a great post-pregnancy solution for non-nursing parents. “Topical retinoids (retinA) are the single best topical treatment in that scientific studies prove they can stimulate new collagen synthesis, thicken the skin and smooth it out,” says Jennifer MacGregor, MD, a dermatologist in New York City. Of course, there’s no such thing as a “miracle cream” or a one-size-fits-all solution for stretch marks. If you’re concerned about introducing a new product to your skin care regime, always seek professional advice from a dermatologist or doctor.
