From the Emerald Isle to the top of the baby name charts, Gannon has come a long way. The masculine name stems from Irish roots and sticks with the trend of last names-turned-first names imported into the US. The name is a derived Anglicized version of the last name Mag Fhionnáin, which also inspired the name Fionn. This other variation remains ever-popular throughout Ireland, while its brother Gannon has bypassed it considerably stateside. It means “descendant of Fionnán,” which derives from the term fionn, meaning “fair.” While the Irish may historically be known for their pale complexions, this little one can be fair in much more meaningful ways.
