Kateri is a girl’s name of Native American origin. A famous bearer was St. Kateri, the 17th-century daughter of a Catholic Algonquin mother and a Mohawk father. Originally named Tekakwitha, she adopted the name Kateri upon her baptism. It’s a form of the Greek name Catherine, which means “pure,” “each of the two,” or “my consecration of your name.” St. Kateri’s face was scarred from illness at a young age, but on her deathbed her skin miraculously became clear.
