Wilgefortis was a woman destined to be married off to a man she didn't love, and so it's said she prayed to made unlovable or unsightly, and thus she became a bearded woman. She received a great deal of backlash for this solution, and she subsequently became the folk saint for unhappy, abused women. Vilgefortz is a boy's name based on this tale.
