Why Jessica Alba Goes to Therapy With Her Daughter Makes Perfect Sense
Mental health is having a big moment right now. Celebrities like Chrissy Teigen have become advocates for mental health, and the importance of getting the help you need to be the best parent possible. Now, actress and businesswoman Jessica Alba is getting vocal about how she gets a hold on her and her family’s mental health.
Alba was a keynote speaker at Her Campus Media’s eighth annual Her Conference in Hollywood. The Honest Company co-founder discussed difficulties starting The Honest Company, maternity leave and how therapy helps shape her family’s dynamic, The Hollywood Reporter recaps. Specifically the actress turned businesswoman opened up about why she decided to go to therapy with her 10-year-old daughter, Honor. Alba says she hopes it will help her to be a better mother and strengthen her communication with her daughter.
"Some people think, like in my family, you talk to a priest and that’s it. I don’t really feel comfortable talking to him about my feelings,” The Hollywood Reporter quotes. “I didn’t grow up in an environment where you talked about this stuff, and it was just like shut it down and keep it moving. So I find a lot of inspiration just in talking to my kids.”
Alba’s family values also extend into the workflow at Honest’s office. The mom of three encourages a parent-friendly environment at Honest by offering benefits geared towards parents, especially moms. Honest offers four months of maternity leave and two months of paternity leave for men, plus a flexible work schedule when returning. And there’s a room in the office which gives a “dignified” way for moms to pump breast milk.
