Shay Mitchell started the new year by sharing some personal news with her fans. In a recent Instagram story, the Pretty Little Liars actress revealed she suffered from a miscarriage last year, People reports.

Mitchell topped off 2018 by posting a bunch of her favorite photos. She finished off her year in review by explaining “although it was an amazing year, it didn’t come without some hardships.”

The celebrity then shared a picture of an ultrasound and a heartbreak emoji, posting a candid note where she reveals she “miscarried and lost the child of my hopes and dreams.”

“We all have to deal with various struggles and challenges in life. And sometimes, it’s easier to only showcase the good times on social media, which is what leads many people to criticize it for its lack of authenticity,” the 31-year-old admits. “Having so many people follow me on Instagram and read my posts is both incredibly humbling and hugely uplifting. The support and affection that so many of you show me lifts me up during even my darkest days, one of which happened last year after I miscarried and lost the child of my hopes and dreams.”

Mitchell reminds her fans “we seldom really know or understand the struggle and hardships that other people are going through.” With that in mind, she’s urging others to start off the year by being “more compassionate, empathetic, patient and thoughtful with each other.”

Once you’ve experienced the heartbreak of a miscarriage, it isn’t always easy to share your struggle with others. But once you do open up, it becomes more manageable to cope. Take it from these celebrities who have used their platform to speak out on their experience with miscarriage. Not to mention former First Lady Michelle Obama, who recently shared her devastating struggle when she was first trying to grow her family.
