Halloween is one of my favorite times of year, but finding the right balance between festive fun and nightmare fuel can be a delicate balance when you’ve got a toddler. My 2-year-old wants in on all the pumpkin-carving, candy-eating, costume-wearing merriment his big brother enjoys, but he has no problem telling me, “dats scawy, Mom!” when the movies fall out of his comfort zone. Fortunately, you can find middle ground when it comes to toddler-friendly Halloween movies.

Ready to cuddle up with your cutie and enjoy a wicked good time. Scroll down to see the best toddler Halloween movies that are sweet and silly, with just the right amount of spook factor.

Hotel Transylvania (2012)

Available for rent on Prime

Image: Amazon

Dracula runs a high-end resort where monsters can relax safely away from humans. Everything goes off-script when a human boy accidentally discovers the hotel, and Dracula must protect his daughter and fellow monster guests. Katherine B., mom of two from New York, says that she loves watching this one with her little ones because they love the colorful, over-the-top monsters, the silly slapstick humor and the catchy songs. It’s playful without being scary—and my kids especially enjoy pointing out their favorite characters and laughing at Dracula’s exaggerated reactions.

Spookley the Square Pumpkin (2004)

Available on Netflix

Image: Netflix

Spookley is no ordinary pumpkin—he’s square, not round. And that difference makes him a target for teasing in the pumpkin patch. (My 5-year-old pointed out how this was “not nice!”). When a terrible storm threatens the farm, Spookley’s shape turns into his greatest gift. Refusing to roll away, he steps up to save Jack the scarecrow and the other pumpkins. We love the sweet core message of Spookley: unique characteristics can be our greatest strengths. At a runtime of 45 minutes, this one kept my boys pretty engaged.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Available on Disney +

Image: Disney+

Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas behind a holiday door in the forest and decides to take it over with the help of his friends from Halloween Town. Both my 2-year-old and 5-year-old love this movie. The songs are super-catchy (I’m hearing “This is Halloween” in my sleep at this point). A heads-up for parents: It’s a little darker than most toddler Halloween movies: Oogie Boogie and some of the monsters can be a bit intense, and the overall vibe is meant to be eerie. This one might be better for the 4+ crowd—or for families where toddlers have already dipped a toe into “spooky but fun.”

Super Monsters Save Halloween (2018)

Available on Netflix

Image: Netflix

The preschool-friendly Super Monsters are excited to show their neighbors that Halloween can be fun, not frightening. With their mix of magical abilities and big hearts, they help everyone in town see that costumes, pumpkins and trick-or-treating are nothing to be afraid of. We love that this option is more “friendship and teamwork” than “spooky.” At under 30 minutes, it’s also a great pick for a toddlers with shorter attention spans. Ashley K., mom of two from New York, agrees, saying that her 2-and-a-half-year-old enjoyed this one for a whole 20 minutes (almost the entire duration of the special). “In toddler life, that’s like an hour,” she jokes.

Sing: Thriller (Short, 2024)

Available on Netflix

Image: Netflix

During a stage performance of “Thriller,” a mysterious ooze causes partygoers to transform into dancing zombies. My kids love this playful twist on the classic number, and at only 11 minutes long, it’s more of a Halloween-flavored musical short than a full movie. Shannon H., a mom of two in Virginia, says,” My kids love the movie Sing, so we were so excited to find this little Halloween short. It’s the perfect amount of spooky—enough for them to laugh and dance along with their favorite characters, but not so scary that I end up with a line of tiny humans in my bed.”

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)

Available on Disney+

Image: Disney+

This classic Disney anthology features two animated tales: “The Wind in the Willows” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” In the latter, Ichabod Crane, a schoolteacher in Sleepy Hollow, becomes entangled in a rivalry with the local bully, Brom Bones, over the affections of Katrina Van Tassel. The story culminates in a suspenseful chase involving the legendary Headless Horseman. Lisa S., mom of two in New York, says, “I love reading the original story, and my son really enjoys the cartoon—it’s a sweet little win-win for us.” It’s just the right amount of suspense to keep toddlers engaged without scaring them, and the humor and quirky characters keep the tone light and fun.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)

Available on Apple TV

Image: Apple TV+

In this sweet Halloween classic, the Peanuts gang dresses up and goes trick-or-treating while Linus waits in the pumpkin patch, convinced the ‘Great Pumpkin’ will come to deliver gifts to children all over town. At about 25 minutes, it’s the perfect length for toddlers, and the gentle humor and familiar Peanuts characters make it a comforting, not-scary toddler Halloween movie pick. Nicole A., mom of a 3-year-old in New York, agrees: “Watching it with my daughter feels special because I remember seeing it on network TV when I was a kid.” Because it’s vintage and less flashy than modern animation, little ones might need a bit of encouragement to engage at first, but the classic story usually wins them over.

Mickey’s Tale of Two Witches (2021)

Available on Disney+

Image: Disney+

On Halloween night, Mickey tells Pluto a story about two witches-in-training—Minnie the Wonderful and Daisy Doozy—who must pass four tests at the Witch Academy. Daisy Doozy isn’t so sure she has what it takes, but with Minnie and a little help from their friends, she learns that believing in yourself and working as a team can be pretty magical. This one is colorful, musical and made with preschoolers in mind, so the spooky elements are silly and light. At about 45 minutes, it’s just the right length for a toddler movie night. There are witches, a mischievous ghost and a few mild “peril” moments, but it all wraps up with friendship and fun.

Room on the Broom (2012)

Available on Prime Video

Image: Apple TV+

Based on the beloved picture book, this 25-minute short follows a kind witch who keeps making room on her broomstick for new animal friends. When a dragon shows up, the gang has to work together to save her. My kids love the animation, the storytelling and the familiar feel since we read the book together all year round. It’s sweet, funny and just a tiny bit spooky without going overboard. The dragon might be a little intense for very sensitive little ones, but this particular scene is brief, and the movie concludes on a happy, heartwarming note.

Blippi’s Trick-or-Treat Halloween Adventure (2024)

Available on Prime Video

Image: YouTube

Blippi and Meekah are excited to go trick-or-treating, but their night takes a turn when they meet the Halloween King, who’s more interested in pulling pranks than handing out candy. Instead of getting scared, the pair uses their problem-solving skills (and plenty of songs and silly moments) to outsmart him. Taylor P., mom of two from New York, says: “My daughter loves the songs and loves to help Blippi and Meekah solve tricky challenges and restore the candy before Halloween night ends!”
