The Best Baby Dolls for Toddlers, According to Parents
Baby dolls are a classic toddler toy, and for good reason. Dolls offer children companionship and comfort, along with a number of other socio-emotional developmental benefits that will stick with them for years—if not a lifetime—to come. “Baby dolls are an open-ended and simple toy that can be played with in a multitude of ways, with a wide range of ages and ability levels,” explains Chelsea Swopes, MS CCC-SLP, a pediatric speech-language pathologist based in Orange County, California.
While you can buy plush baby dolls for infants, this type of toy is best suited to children one year and up, who are already engaging in pretend play. Realistic baby dolls in particular “provide learning opportunities for toddlers to process situations they are experiencing every day,” says Cassidy Freitas, PhD, a licensed marriage and family therapist in San Diego, California. Swopes reassures parents that “even in the simplest of play, a baby doll can be explored visually and tactilely by your toddler. You can use the baby doll to model simple actions in play like drink, eat or kiss, and then incorporate the baby doll into more complex pretend play actions as your child grows.” Want to learn more about the benefits of playing with dolls? Doll for newborns and babies
- Soft, huggable body
- Hand-painted features
- Organic cotton and wool filling
- Small in size
Designed to be cuddled from the very first days (with supervision, of course), this Waldorf baby doll is absolutely adorable. Its petite size—less than 6 inches in height—is perfect for infants learning to grasp or toddlers who’ve just started playing with baby dolls. The body has a soft terry cloth texture made from organic cotton and is filled with natural wool, so it feels more like a stuffed animal than a hard plastic doll. Each doll is crafted in Germany and the faces are hand-painted for a sweet, homespun look.
Age rating: 0+ months | Height: 6" | Weight: N/A
I'm not at all Waldorf… but [I] am in love with the dolls. Basically, they're made of natural materials (cotton, wool) and their faces are a neutral expression, which is supposed to enable the child to imagine how the doll feels, as opposed to a doll having a plastered on smile, so it always has to be happy. - Tonya_G, The Bump forum member
Baby doll with sensory features
- Built-in squeaker and rattle
- Organic cotton body
- Hypoallergenic corn fiber fill
- Small in size
Next up is a soft doll with hidden sensory features designed to delight babies and toddlers. The plush doll is nice and lightweight, and pulls double-duty as a squeaky toy and rattle for added auditory stimulation. It’s also made from organic cotton with a hypoallergenic filling made from corn fiber, and has embroidered features for safety. Available in cream, light pink, baby blue and mint green.

Realistic baby doll
- Available in a range of skin tones
- Anatomically correct features
- Doll can sit, stand or lie down
- Doll clothing sold separately
A realistic newborn doll makes a great new sibling gift for toddlers. “During my time as a nanny the family I worked for welcomed a baby girl. And the 3-year-old /[daughter] was given a baby doll of her own and a diaper bag to go with it,” says The Bump forum member LadySamLady. She explained that “it really helped her adjust and she would often mimic what her mommy or I was doing with her baby sister with her doll. If her sister was having a bottle, so did her doll and of course they napped at the same time.” This anecdote showcases how a simple toy can help tots deal with new, and often overwhelming, situations. Many brands offer realistic baby dolls, but our favorite has to be Miniland. The brand is beloved for its multicultural and special-needs-centric dolls, and the fact that their baby dolls have anatomically correct body parts (including their genitalia)—which is refreshingly representative in every sense. This baby girl doll is made from high-quality vinyl and isn’t overly heavy, so your tot can easily carry her around.

I got my son a Baby Stella doll when we told him about baby sister. They have a boy doll available too. They're not bath safe, but I appreciated that they have a variety of skin tones so they look more like him. - marymh80, the Bump forum member
I bought my niece the Baby Stella doll for Christmas. She is in love with it. It comes with a magnetic nuk and you can buy a feeding set that also has a bottle that connects to the mouth. I highly recommend this doll. - flowerx2, The Bump forum member

For toddlers, there’s something satisfying about holding a lightly weighted, life-like baby doll. American Girl, a household name in baby dolls for toddlers, gets it. Not only do their bitty baby dolls look realistic, but they come in several skin, hair and eye tones and in girl as well as boy versions, so they can look just like your little one. “Boys absolutely benefit from all the beautiful learning and connection opportunities that dolls provide,” Freitas says. “Empathy building, emotional expression, fine motor development, speech and language and exposure to caretaking are important for all children.” This baby doll has eyes that open and shut, a cuddly body and vinyl limbs, and an adorable and removable outfit. (And our community loves them for girls too!)
Age rating: 18+ months | Height: 15" | Weight: 2 lbs.
I wouldn't have thought of buying an American Girl doll myself when my daughter was a toddler; in my head the brand was an expensive model for somewhat older kids. But one Christmas grandma showed up with a Bitty Baby and a change of clothes, and my daughter lit up. She immediately set about changing the doll's clothes, shushing her and walking her around in a toy stroller. The doll stayed in rotation for as long as my daughter was young enough for baby dolls. - Daniel C., dad of one
Dear daughter was given a Bitty Baby for her 2nd birthday (6 months ago). She LOVES it and Bitty is still her favorite thing to play with. - blondie75, The Bump forum member
Twin baby dolls
- Soft, huggable bodies
- Easy to wipe clean
- Tons of accessories
- Dolls are a bit heavy
Have a set of twins at home? The Melissa & Doug Mine to Love Twins offer a double dose of cuteness. These perfectly-sized babies are too precious, with their removable rompers and baby hats. If they start “crying,” your toddler can pop the dolls’ thumbs or included pacifiers into their open mouths, and when they gently lay the dolls down for a nap, they’ll see the dolls’ eyes close. Mom of twins Kathy, says her little boy and girl like “parroting what we do as parents” while using the dolls. “One twin especially loves to mimic what we do for them—lay them in the mine to love bed that goes with the doll, sing them a song, read them a book, lay a blanket on them /[and] pat them on the back,” says Kathy.
Age rating: 18+ months | Height: 15" | Weight: 3.2 lbs.
My twins have the Mine to Love Twins from Melissa & Doug and they get a LOT of love in our house. The head, hands, and feet are hard while the torso of the body is soft. - Kathy S., mom of twins
Poseable baby doll
- Posable limbs
- Doll sucks its thumb
- Light vanilla scent
- Expensive

Parents rave about the quality of Corolle toddler dolls—and we can see why. Made from a soft vinyl material, the dolls are gently-weighted and the limbs are poseable for endless play opportunities. Age rating: 18+ months | Height: 12" | Weight: 1 lb.
My [son] loves his ‘baby.’ It is also a Corolle doll. He mainly sleeps with it or wants it when he is sad. But he will at times play with it. He started liking it around 15 months. He was never interested in a stuffed animal, but baby was his favorite as soon as he met a real life baby. - Temp146997687502158, The Bump forum member
I'm picky about toys for [my daughter]…but I really like these Corolle dolls from France. She's gorgeous in real life. We've messed her hair up so it looks like [my daughter’s] did when she was born. She's smaller than an average human newborn, but the way she's weighted feels like she's real. And she smells good, too for some reason. - moroccojade, The Bump forum member
Easy to clean baby doll
- Machine-washable
- Soft, huggable body
- Available in different skin tones
- Small in size
- Back of the doll’s head is flat
The best dolls for one year olds are small, lightweight and soft enough for comforting cuddles. Introducing the Soft ‘n Cute doll by beloved brand Baby Alive. Unlike traditional Baby Alive dolls, which are packed full of interactive features, this doll is much simpler. This may seem like a downside, but a basic poseable doll allows your child’s imagination to take center stage during playtime. Your little one will love giving their snuggly soft doll her pretend teether doll accessory or posing the doll like a baby with her thumb in her mouth. The best part? This doll is fully machine-washable, so you don’t have to worry about it getting grubby.
Age rating: 18+ months | Height: 11" | Weight: N/A
Both of my girls love the Baby Alive dolls where you feed them some (sort of gross) concoction. (It's a rite of passage for any parent to have to scoop gobs of gunk out of a doll's mouth.) This is a great starter option. Less mess and more cuddly with the same signature Baby Alive doe eyes. - Lauren B., mom of three
My kids LOVE their Baby Alive dolls. - GingerSB, The Bump forum member
My daughter loves all of her dolls, but her Baby Alives are the favorites. - RHitch, The Bump forum member

Disney doll for toddlers
- Soft and cuddly
- Based on a Disney princess character
- Hair may get tangled
By the time they reach 2-years-old many tots will have developed their own interests and may even have a favorite storybook character. And if your little one is obsessed with fairytales, this princess doll is the perfect choice. This Rapunzel doll has a soft body, long flowing locks and comes with a pacifier and baby bottle that fits in her mouth.
Age rating: 2+ years | Height: 12" | Weight: 15.5 oz.
The Disney Princesses were a staple in our house, from the first time my daughter heard the song ‘Let It Go’ through our trip to Disney World when she got to meet them all in person. And as a little girl who loved babies, she was obsessed with this whole line of dolls. Rapunzel, her favorite princess, was a particularly big hit, although the Tinkerbell one was a close contender. - Daniel C., dad of one
Baby doll with carrier
- Baby doll’s arms move up and down
- Diverse mix of boy and girl dolls, each with a distinct skin tone
- Baby carrier has Velcro straps for easy adjustments
- Expensive
- Limited availability
What better way for your toddler to play “make believe” than with a baby doll they can take around everywhere in their own baby carrier? This option from Götz is not only one of the most life-like baby dolls for toddlers, with its blushed cheeks, feathery eyelashes and eyes that open and close, but it’s also very simple. “The first pretend play skills a child exhibits are concrete, familiar moments that they themselves have already had experience with,” Swopes explains, so if they have a younger sibling who they’ve seen you carrying around in a baby carrier, they might want to try baby-wearing on for size! The baby doll is lightweight and the carrier sports padded shoulder and waist straps for cushiony comfort too, meaning your little one won’t be complaining about any aches and pains.
Age rating: 3+ years | Height: 16.5" | Weight: N/A
My [daughter's] favorite baby doll is a Gotz brand doll. It has vinyl arms, legs and a head. Looks like a newborn with no hair or anything. She started playing with dolls between 18 and 24 months if I remember correctly. We have a few others, but none that do any fancy tricks like make noise or pee. - AmandaJLewis, The Bump forum member

Dolls aren’t just cute—they’re super versatile toys that appeal to toddlers, preschoolers and older kids alike. Below are some of the most exciting benefits of baby doll play for toddlers:
-
Helps toddlers explore their emotions. Processing emotions isn’t something that comes easy to a toddler—in fact, it’s super challenging for a little one to experience big feelings and not know how to express them. But playing with a baby doll can help. “While a toddler isn’t necessarily going to communicate to you directly that they’re worried, frustrated, disappointed or trying to learn something,” Freitas says, they may use their doll as a conduit. Maybe they’ll have their doll act out what they’re struggling with, or perhaps they’ll have their doll ask for help or communicate what they want or don’t want. Baby dolls can help toddlers articulate their needs, even when language is still developing.
-
Promotes language and cognitive maturation. Baby dolls can be a great tool for language development. You can use a baby doll to help your toddler learn, say, the words for parts of the body and articles of clothing. While you’re sitting with your toddler and their baby doll, you can also model a simple action and offer some simple narration. For example, you can pretend to feed the baby doll and say “drink the bottle, baby!” Swopes explains this “can build understanding and eventually foster spontaneous use of verbs through play with baby dolls in a natural and meaningful way.” Even though your toddler will probably just mirror your actions in the beginning, that’s okay, because they’ll begin to associate certain actions and concepts with certain words. “They are building understanding first, which is so important—that verbalization will come,” says Swopes.
-
Builds self-esteem and confidence. Baby dolls can also be an excellent tool for helping prepare your kiddo for an upcoming experience that may be new and scary. Just recently, Swopes helped her 4-year-old prepare for his doctor’s visit by showing him, on the doll, how the pediatrician might examine his eyes, his ears, his throat—even where he might receive a shot. They brought her son’s baby doll to the appointment and the doctor performed a checkup on the doll before moving onto his buddy. “It was such a comfort for my son and completely helped him feel prepared and aware of what was happening,” Swopes says.
There’s an infinite variety of baby dolls for toddlers, and as long as your kiddo loves the baby doll they have (and feels comfort and security when they need it most), you have nothing to worry about. But to help you scale down your search, be sure to keep these features in mind when shopping:
-
Size and age ratings. Look for an appropriately sized doll that your toddler can easily maneuver and manipulate, Swopes says. Also pay attention to the manufacturer’s age recommendations, since certain dolls can be too advanced for young toddlers or have small accessories that could pose choking risks.
-
Softness and cuddle factor. Not all baby dolls for toddlers have to be soft, but stuffed cotton cuties and baby dolls with delicate, embroidered features make the best sleep companions. Plus, they’re often machine-washable (on gentle cycles), for when your kiddo carries their new BFF everywhere.
-
Multicultural representation. It’s important that toddlers have an opportunity to play with dolls that look like them, to foster a strong sense of self-worth. It’s also important for toddlers to play with multicultural dolls that celebrate diversity and encourage awareness and inclusivity. Look for baby dolls with various skin tones, facial features and hairstyles and those that are differently abled.
-
Accessories that support open-ended play. Swopes recommends baby dolls with no lights, sounds or interactive functions that may require batteries, to best inspire your child’s imagination. “The more a toy does, the less the child is required to do,” she explains. “Research studies in the area of early development have shown that electronic toys actually hinder pretend or imaginative play as well as verbalizations, shared connection and engagement.” Accessories aren’t necessary, Swopes says, but if they’re simple enough and can help foster the understanding, repetition and problem solving that comes with open-ended play (think: a bottle, bath, stroller or clothing), then they can be great learning tools.
