Origin:Greek
Meaning:Fish; House of Fish
Ninus is a masculine name of Greek origin that stems from Akkadian and possibly Hurrian roots. Meaning "fish" or "House of Fish," this name has a riverine vibe to it as it is the name of the founder of the ancient great city of Nineveh, which sat along the Tigris and Khawṣar Rivers and thrived during the 1st millennium BC. Carvings of a fish inside a house were found on several stone pillars throughout the ruins, suggesting this unique symbol to be the emblem of Nineveh. This city is thought to be linked to the goddess Ishtar, possibly even established in her honor or under her protection. One of Ishtar's epithets/forms is Anunitu, which shares the same root and "fish" meaning as Ninus. Ishtar is often associated with the Pisces constellation, emphasizing Ninus's deep connection to the aquatic world while touching the stars above. Ninus is a name that has journeyed far down the river of time to have survived this long. Its strongest association being that of a founder of a historic city may inspire your kiddo to create their own iconic place in the world.
