Pretty impressive. But it’s the motive behind Audrey’s moves that’s garnered the video nearly 16 million views.
Audrey was born with Diamond Blackfan Anemia , a rare blood condition that sees about 25 to 35 new cases in North America each year. Essentially, bone marrow doesn’t create enough red blood cells to carry oxygen through the body.
After a video of Audrey dancing to “Uptown Funk” quickly — and unexpectedly — went viral, Audrey’s parents realized sharing more of the videos on Facebook could be a means of raising awareness — and funds — for the Diamond Blackfan Anemia Foundation.
Dad Scott Nethery was initially concerned that Audrey would be made fun of; because of DBA, she’s short for her age and has some facial abnormalities. But that wasn’t the case at all. “Once people realize she has a life threatening illness, it really touches their hearts,” he tells Metro.
Most people living with DBA are diagnosed within their first year and can live long and healthy lives; treatment options typically include corticosteroid drugs or blood transfusions (Audrey has already received over 20 transfusions), although bone marrow transplants are also considered. Some children don’t need therapy at all.
“Audrey is a happy, loving, smart, little girl who loves to dance, listen to music, and collect dolls and stuffed animals,” says Nethery. “She is incredibly strong and leaves an impression on everyone she meets!”
