Why Jana Kramer Never Wants to Hear 'Breast Is Best' Ever Again
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Fed is best.
In an episode of her podcast Whine Down with Jana Kramer, the actress and country singer discussed an issue that hits close to home: formula feeding shaming.
The episode follows a recent interview with Us Weekly, where the One Tree Hill alum spoke about all the criticism she faced when she chose not to breastfeed her now 3-year-old daughter, Jolie. The backlash left such an impression on the mom, that when she gave birth to her second child, Jace, in November, she tried to give nursing another go.
It didn’t end well.
“I had two of my girlfriends over at my house, right after Jace, trying to get milk out of my boob, and I’m just like, bawling my eyes out and [my husband is] like, ‘Why are you doing this?’ And I said, ‘Because everybody’s telling me what I need to do,” she tells Us.
Eventually, Kramer made the decision to switch over to formula for the well-being of her whole family. Now, she’s turning to her podcast to speak out on all the hate she’s been receiving for a decision that doesn’t involve anyone else.
“I feel like I have to hide the bottle when I’m in public because people are judging me,” she shares.
“It’s just frustrating when women [are told] breast milk is the best,” she says. “I understand that—[they] don’t need to tell me something that I [already] know.”
The next time you stand on a pedestal and preach that breast is best, try to remember more often than not, we don’t know the personal reasons behind why a family is choosing formula. And, anyway, it’s really no one’s business but their own.
Kramer has one thing to say to every mom who knows her struggle all too well: “Let’s not feel like we have to defend our decision. Let’s just be the best moms that we are.”
