Making the transition from a crib to a toddler bed is an exciting milestone for kids and parents alike. As your little one becomes more active and mobile, the right sleep space can cushion their next step into independent sleep. According to Anna McMillan, a certified sleep coach and founder of Little Winks Sleep, the right bedding set can help children “associate sleep with a positive, warm and inviting space.”

With that in mind, we set out to find the best sleep-safe toddler comforters, quilts, duvet covers and sheets that are breathable and warm enough for year-round use. Based on our extensive market research, we tested 10 sets with the help of families and their kids. According to our testers, these options stood out as the most durable and high-quality, the easiest to care for and, of course, the most comfy.

How We Tested and Chose the Best Toddler Bedding Sets

Image: Yonelba O., Kanan S., Kimberly D.

To simplify your search for the best toddler bedding, we conducted extensive research and identified the 18 most popular options on the market. We then created a shortlist of 10 sets to test. From there:

  • We enlisted the help of seven families to test 10 sets of toddler bedding; some tested more than one option. These parents made up their kids’ beds with these sheets, and their little ones tried them for at least three nights to get the full experience. Then, they evaluated each toddler bedding set across several categories. Our testers told us details like how well these sets fit mattresses, if they held up well after washing and drying, how their kids reacted to the designs and whether or not they’d buy the set for themselves.
  • We interviewed a pediatric sleep expert to ensure our product recommendations align with the best practices for promoting quality, safe sleep.
  • To understand how these toddler bedding sets have worked for other families, we conducted exhaustive market research, scouring forums and message boards and reading user reviews to find out what parents nationwide looked for in toddler comforter sets.
  • When choosing which toddler bedding to feature in our roundup, we carefully considered various factors, such as material, mattress size options, care instructions and price point. We also prioritized sets that have earned OEKO TEX certification, meaning that the materials have passed safety tests for over 1,000 harmful substances.

Best toddler comforter bedding set

Little Unicorn Cotton Muslin Toddler Bedding 3-Piece Set

What We Love
  • Lightweight yet warm, according to our tester
  • Doesn’t wrinkle easily
  • Envelope-style closure pillowcase
Things To Consider
  • Pillowcase runs big, according to our tester
  • Not OEKO TEX-certified

Comforters are a great alternative to duvets (which tend to be heavier), making them ideal for warm weather or little ones who run hot when sleeping. When choosing a breathable, cozy toddler comforter, you can’t go wrong with bedding made from cotton muslin—just like this style from Little Unicorn. The three-piece set comes with a comforter, a fitted sheet and a matching pillowcase, all made from the same premium fabric. “It’s the perfect level of thickness for toddlers,” shared our product tester Kimberly.

Image: Kimberly D.

Kimberly told us that her 2-year-old loved how soft this set felt and she agreed. “The bedding is a cotton muslin material that feels soft to the touch and keeps my toddler warm but not hot at night. The material also helps keep it wrinkle-free,” she explained. Plus, Kimberly said it felt even softer after washing and drying it—and that the pattern and off-white base color prevented stains from showing.

Specifically designed for convertible cribs and toddler beds, the comforter and fitted sheet fit Kimberly’s son’s bed perfectly. While the standard-sized pillowcase was a bit big for her toddler’s pillow, she appreciated the envelope-style closure. She felt the set created a safe, cozy sleep environment for her son, and the colorful truck pattern was an added bonus. “The bedding design is perfect for toddlers,” said Kimberly, “My toddler is really into trucks right now so he was so excited when I put it on his bed.” To top it all off, Kimberly told us that her 2-year-old loved the set so much that he “even asked to get in his bed before bedtime to spend more time using his new bedding”—which toddler parents will know is nothing short of a miracle.

Set includes: 1 comforter, 1 fitted sheet, 1 pillowcase | Material (exterior): Cotton muslin | Material (fill): Polyester | Care instructions: Machine wash cold; tumble dry low

Our product tester says:

“As a mother who always wants the best for her toddler, I can appreciate this bedding and say this is one of the best in the market. The quality of the bedding feels high and makes me feel like it will last us for a long time and will grow with my toddler as we transition him from his crib to his toddler bed. I like how the bedding keeps my son warm but not hot while sleeping at night.”

What We Love
  • Easy to make the bed with, according to our tester
  • Comes with a flat sheet
  • Affordable price point
Things To Consider
  • Pillowcase runs big, according to our tester
  • Sheets could be softer

This toddler comforter bedding set from Walmart’s in-house Parent’s Choice label offers families a cozy option at a more budget-friendly price point. It even comes with four pieces: A comforter, a fitted sheet, a flat sheet and a pillowcase. “I think it's a great value and design for someone looking for cute bedding for their child's room,” said Sarah, our product tester. “My daughter was so excited to see the different pictures on the sheet and comforter. Her favorite was the rainbows, and she excitedly pointed to them.” And if your child’s not a fan of rainbows, don’t worry—the set also comes in dinosaur patterns.

Image: Sarah C.

Sarah found this set super easy to use when making her toddler’s bed. “I often have trouble getting sheets to fit the crib mattress correctly. Thankfully, this sheet fits perfectly without causing the mattress to bend on the sides,” she told us, and she appreciated that the flat sheet stayed in place well. Meanwhile, the lightweight comforter can be counted on to keep your child at their ideal temperature as they snooze. “The comforter was on the thinner side, which I find perfect for my daughter's bed. It tends to get hot upstairs where she sleeps and I did not want something too thick,” Sarah praised.

In contrast to other options on our list, this toddler bedding is made from 100 percent polyester, which may deter some parents. However, “the sheets and the comforter were fairly soft,” said Sarah, “I think they might get a little softer after a few washes.” It’s also worth noting that this set is OEKO TEX-certified for added peace of mind.

Set includes: 1 comforter, 1 fitted sheet, 1 flat top sheet, 1 pillowcase | Material: 100% polyester | Care instructions: Machine wash cold; tumble dry low

Our product tester says:

“I would recommend this to other families with toddlers. It’s cute, easy to care for and fits [my daughter’s] bed perfectly. It’s also affordable and easily available.”

What We Love
  • Exceptionally soft and fluffy, according to our tester
  • Doesn’t wrinkle
Things To Consider
  • High price point
  • No bright color options or patterns

Though similar to comforters, quilts tend to be warmer. With that in mind, they’re perfect for families looking to add an extra layer to their little one’s beds in chilly weather or as standalone bed cover year-round. We tested two styles and the Parachute Organic Cloud Cotton Toddler Quilt stood out due to its premium-quality construction and plush coziness. It’s made from several layers of 100 percent organic Turkish cotton and has been pre-washed for added softness.

Image: Nicole P.

Our tester Nicole and her 2-year-old were both big fans of how comfy this quilt was. “The material of this quilt is very soft and fluffy. It felt the same after washing it once, but I think it'll get softer over time,” Nicole shared, “I want it for my own bedding!” Likewise, her toddler was excited about his new blanket. According to Nicole, “when he saw it, he smiled and snuggled up to the quilt, like giving it a hug. He really enjoyed how soft this quilt was and slept a little longer.” What’s more, she told us it was an ideal thickness; it was lightweight enough for hotter nights but still warm enough for winter.

Nicole used this quilt on her toddler’s crib-sized bed and told us it fit very well. “I was able to tuck it in the sides of the bed to make it look nice when making the bed. We untucked the top part of the quilt for bedtime, so it wasn't as snug, but it stayed nicely on the bed,” she reported. While this toddler quilt has a higher price tag, Nicole says it’s definitely worth it; some reviewers even say they use it as a throw blanket in their homes after their kids outgrow it. “The high quality and style of this bedding makes up for [the price] and I know it'll last a long time! I would 100 percent buy this bedding for myself,” she says.

Set includes: 1 quilt | Material: 100% cotton | Care instructions: Machine wash cold; tumble dry low

Our product tester says:

“It was light and fluffy and the perfect thickness. This quilt is breathable, and I don't think my toddler will get too hot at night while sleeping in the summer and it's still warm enough in the winter months. I think this bedding can be passed down and will last a long time!”

What We Love
  • Gentle on sensitive skin, according to our tester
  • GOTS-certified organic cotton
  • Available in two sizes
Things To Consider
  • Delivery takes two weeks

One of the most important qualities in toddler sheets is that they fit your little one’s mattress well so they don’t move around when your child sleeps. With this set, our tester Jennell described making her daughter’s crib-sized bed “a breeze.” She added: “The fitted mattress was on in no time and no creases or wrinkles to be seen. My daughter is a wild sleeper at night [and] it stayed put the entire night.” If you’re searching for toddler sheets that can withstand dozens of snoozes and wash cycles to come, this set can be counted on to get the job done.

Image: Jennell G.

Each Nestig Toddler Sheet Set comes with two fitted sheets and a matching pillowcase, so you’ll always have a backup on hand. Jennell appreciated that both are made from 100 percent cotton jersey, while also being OEKO TEX-certified and GOTS-certified, meaning that their production ethically and sustainably meets the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers. Together, these qualities resulted in gentle yet durable sheets. “My daughter has very sensitive skin and I noticed immediately that she had no reaction to the sheets which is very important for us,” Jennell shared. After washing and drying the set, she told us they felt even softer than before, which further impressed her.

Nestig offers a number of sheets decorated with beautiful prints, and this set is no exception. Jennell and her 2-year-old picked out a style from the brand’s Richard Scarry collaboration and they both loved the design. In fact, Jennell said it’s positively impacted her daughter’s nighttime routine. “Since having the sheets, my daughter has been constantly pointing out letters on the sheets. Before my toddler was scared to sleep in her bed but now sleep has become fun, and she can literally not wait to hop in bed,” she praised. To sum it up in Jennell’s words, “these sheets have exceeded my expectations and have really lifted the bar on how all sheets should be.”

Set includes: 2 fitted sheets, 1 pillowcase | Material: 100% cotton | Care instructions: Machine wash; tumble dry

Our product tester says:

“From the beginning, we noticed how well-made these sheets are; my toddler is constantly playing on her bed and is ready for bedtime without a fuss. I have a feeling these sheets will be around for a very long time especially since they are made with the best materials.”

Target’s in-house labels don’t disappoint when it comes to balancing quality and affordability—and these toddler sheets are a wonderful example. The three-piece set rings in at under $20 and includes a fitted sheet, a flat sheet and a pillowcase. Our product tester Nicole appreciated the budget-friendly price tag and told us she would definitely recommend them to other families. “The thinness of the sheets was great, and I think they'll hold up for a while. I didn't see any wear or tear after washing them,” she shared.

Image: Nicole P.

Just because these toddler sheets are more affordable than other sets doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice durability and comfort. They’re made from 100 percent cotton, so you can rest assured that they’ll be gentle against your little one’s sensitive skin and hold up well—no matter how many spin cycles they go through. “The bedding seemed just as good as adult bedding with the same material. This bedding is OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified, which is very important to me, especially children's sheets,” Nicole added.

Better yet, Nicole found the sheets very easy to put on her 2-year-old’s mattress. “I felt the sheets fit nice enough for a safe sleep environment. The pillowcase fits great and was easy to put on,” she told us. The bottom line: Whether you’re on a budget or need extra sheets just in case, this set is a great choice.

Best toddler duvet and duvet cover

What We Love
  • Only toddler-sized comforter on the market
  • Hidden zipper closure
  • Naturally temperature-regulating and hypoallergenic
Things To Consider
  • Some parents say it wrinkles easily
  • Comforter sold separately

Most toddler bedding sets fit crib- or twin-sized mattresses—but this option from Woolino has been specifically designed for toddlers. The duvet insert and cover are the only ones on the market that measure 51 inches long and 37 inches wide, and our tester Jen told us they were simple to set up on her 2-year-old’s mattress. “It fit perfectly on my child’s bed,” she praised, “I also love that it doesn’t hit the ground when the bed is made.” The comforter was easy to place in the duvet cover, and the hidden zipper closure kept everything in place. According to Jen, “it stayed zipped all night long, and I haven’t had a problem at all with it.”

Image: Jen D.

In addition to its unique size, this toddler comforter stands out because of its premium construction. It’s filled with 100 percent grade-A Australian wool, so it’s naturally temperature-regulating and hypoallergenic. “It feels very breathable,” Jen told us. She lives in California and added that the comforter is cool enough for daytime naps while being warm all night long. To keep things from moving around, it’s made with corner loops to prevent the insert from shifting inside the duvet cover.

Both the insert and the duvet cover are OEKO TEX-certified—and the cover is also made from 100 percent GOTS-certified organic cotton for even more reassurance. The cuddly, breathable material has been combed and ring-spun to increase durability and prevent piling after washing. Jen said she didn’t run into any problems when cleaning this set and was impressed by the bedding’s quality. Most importantly, her 2-year-old described it as “soft and cozy,” making it well-worth the higher price tag in Jen’s eyes.

Set includes: 1 duvet cover, 1 pillowcase; comforter sold separately | Material: 100% cotton (duvet cover and pillowcase)/100% wool (comforter) | Care instructions: Machine wash cold and low; tumble dry

Our product tester says:

“I love the weight of the blanket. I live in California so it can tend to be warmer during the day but cooler at night so it’s perfect for naps during the day as well as nighttime sleep.”

From the get-go, this toddler duvet cover set impressed our tester Yonelba. Thanks to thoughtful, practical details like the well-placed buttons on the rear end of the duvet and the envelope-style pillowcase, she reported that everything fit her 3-year-old’s bed seamlessly. “Everything stays in place and doesn’t move throughout the night,” Yonelba said. Moreover, she added: “The stitching and the buttons are extremely well crafted, and the set itself is very durable and long-lasting.”

Image: Yonelba O.

While most toddler bedding sets on our list are crafted from cotton, this option is made from 100 percent cotton percale—a variation that’s been woven for added durability. Yonelba couldn’t get over how great the bedding felt. “I can’t stop raving about how amazing the quality of this duvet set is,” she shared. Yonelba estimates that it’ll last for many years to come, and for that reason, she thinks it’s definitely worth its price. “The quality of the bedding speaks for itself and I am going to purchase another style as well,” she praised.

Last but not least, the design was a big hit with both Yonelba and her toddler. “The design is beautifully crafted and the bedding set's colors match perfectly with his room's theme. He couldn’t stop naming the dinosaurs he saw on the bedding and was really happy to see the upgraded bedsheets,” she told us. Plus, due to the detailed print, Yonelba says stains aren’t super noticeable, which is a big pro when choosing any toddler bedding.

Set includes: 1 duvet cover, 1 pillowcase | Material: 100% cotton percale | Care instructions: Machine wash cool; tumble dry low

Our product tester says:

“The quality of this set is superb and very comfortable for my son who has sensitive skin. The duvet and pillowcase is heavyweight making it even more luxurious. [] The subtle yet fun prints bring any room together nicely.”

What We Love
  • Simple, secure snap closure
  • Available in several sizes
  • Affordable price point
Things To Consider
  • May shrink slightly after washing
  • Not OEKO TEX-certified

IKEA is known for quality designs at affordable prices, and this toddler duvet cover set lives up to the hype. It comes with a duvet cover and a matching pillowcase, and our tester Yonelba was a fan of both. “I would consider buying different styles of this set to have multiple options throughout the year. [It’s] very affordable compared to others in the market,” she shared. If you change your little one’s sheets frequently or need a few backup sets in case of accidents, this budget-friendly style is a great choice to have on hand.

Image: Yonelba O.

Even though this option is significantly less expensive than other toddler duvet cover sets on the market, it still offers convenience and comfort. Yonelba appreciated the cover’s snap closure which made it simple to slip in her toddler’s duvet and told us that the pillowcase easily fit a standard-size pillow. While Yonelba mentioned that the sheets could be softer, she appreciated that they were lightweight and durable. “The duvet cover is breathable, making it a great night's sleep for my toddler, and it does not make him uncomfortable [even though] he does have some eczema,” she told us.

Another aspect that stood out to Yonelba and her toddler was the fun design. “My 3-year-old son enjoyed the cloud print style on his bed. He immediately noticed that I changed his covers and really liked the style,” she shared. Better yet, the colorful sheets didn’t fade or shrink when Yonelba put them in the washing machine. “It’s also easy to steam and iron,” she praised. All in all, this toddler bedding set can be counted on for plenty of future sweet dreams to come.

Our product tester says:

“The duvet and pillowcase set is absolutely worth the price. If you’re looking for an affordable and durable option, definitely consider these IKEA duvets and covers. They come in various styles, and are very easy to wash, store and steam or iron.”

Toddler Bedding Set Safety Considerations

While safe sleep practices are more prohibitive during a baby’s first year, most pediatric sleep experts still err on the side of caution when introducing loveys, blankets and pillows into a toddler’s sleep space. McMillan likes to use two years as the benchmark for safety. “Two years old is a conservative age recommendation to introduce a flat, firm and hypoallergenic pillow. This is often when a larger, lightweight blanket or comforter can be added, as the sleep sack is transitioned out,” she explains.

“When the weather gets colder, a heavier blanket can be added,” says McMillan. That said, you’ll want to avoid weighted blankets altogether. Loose or heavy bedding can pose suffocation hazards, and small components or decorative items like buttons or loose threads that can detach from bedding could present choking risks. When in doubt, always defer to the manufacturer’s age recommendations and instructions for safe use.

What to Look for in a Toddler Bedding Set

“When it comes to choosing bedding for your toddler, you’ll want them to feel comfortable and cozy, but safety should always be the top priority,” advises McMillan. "While we want our kids to love their sleep space and bedding, it’s most important that it’s safe and warm enough for them.” Once safety is established, these are the qualities she suggests keeping in mind as you browse toddler bedding sets:

  • Mattress size suitability. Toddler bedding sets come in two sizes: Crib or twin. Before clicking “add to cart,” ensure the set suits your child’s mattress. For added security, opt for fitted sheets with elastic corners that secure them in place and prevent them from slipping or bunching up. “Much as you would choose the appropriate size bedding for your bed, you’ll want to make sure the bottom sheet is made for your toddler’s bed size and fits snuggly around the mattress,” advises McMillan. Likewise, “if their blanket or comforter is too small, they may wake up trying to re-position it, and if it’s too large, they might find it hard to navigate,” she explains.
  • Material type. Look for bedding made from soft, breathable fabrics like cotton or bamboo. Both provide optimal airflow and, according to McMillan, “using temperature-appropriate bedding also biologically helps your child have a deeper and better sleep as their core temperature affects the quality of sleep.” If your little one has allergies or skin sensitivities, you’ll also want to avoid any rough or synthetic fabrics that could cause discomfort or irritation.
  • OEKO TEX certification. In addition to material type, many testers told us they preferred toddler bedding that’s earned OEKO TEX certification. Parents said this label offered them added peace of mind that the fabric would be gentle. Plus, those who have kids with sensitive skin and eczema told us that this label was a must-have when choosing toddler bedding.
  • Ease of cleaning. The AAFA recommends washing your sheets at least once a week, but toddler bedding may need to be washed more frequently. While most toddler bedding is designed for easy care and can be put in the washer and dryer, you’ll want to choose an option that can withstand regular washing. Some of our testers also mentioned that they loved fabrics, like cotton, that get softer over time.
  • Aesthetics. McMillan encourages parents to strike a balance between appealing design and simplicity. Don’t shy away from involving your little one in the selection process; allowing them to help pick out their bedding may lead to positive associations with their nighttime routine. Several testers told us that engaging designs (like bright unicorns and colorful trucks) made their children more excited to get into bed. Moreover, parents shared that they appreciated how bedding with patterns easily hid stains that occurred between washes.
