Here are a few tips on what to look for (and how to care for) toddler rain boots:

• Size. You may be tempted to go up a size so your kiddo can grow into their rain boots, but Dr. Williams says to reconsider: “Sizing up in a boot can cause similar problems as a boot which is tight.” This is because too much room can actually lead to friction and blisters around the toes and heels. To ensure the shoes are comfortable, buy the correct size for your child. When in doubt, consult the manufacturer’s sizing guide for accurate measurements.
• Toe box width. Dr. Williams recommends looking for boots that are wide enough to accommodate all of your child’s toes. “The key is a wide toebox to minimize pressure to the inner arch or outer toes. Likewise if children have a wider foot or higher arch they too benefit from a deep toebox. Both strategies minimize rubbing on the toes.”
• Shaft height. While you want your toddler’s rain boots to be protective, they shouldn’t press against the backs of their knees, as this could lead to pain and sores, Dr. Williams explains. Instead, ensure your child’s rain boots stop below their knee for comfort.
• Supportive soles. According to Dr. Williams, younger kids that clench their toes benefit from added support of firmer soles. “While this is not absolute in this age group, if parents note flexion or curling of the toes barefoot then a firm sole can minimize such,” she explains. Secondly, a firmer sole can also help absorb shock to your toddler’s growth plates. Younger children often get apophysitis (an inflammation of the growth plates), which occurs from over-use, due to tight and growing leg muscles. “While the sole being firm is helpful, the boot should be lightweight and easy for a child to wear,” Dr. Williams adds.
• Comfort. We all know kids won’t wear shoes that aren’t comfortable. To avoid a tantrum every time you leave the house, invest in high-quality boots made from flexible materials that won’t weigh little feet down. Pro tip: To avoid sweaty feet and blisters, socks should always be worn with boots.
• Materials. The best toddler rain boots are made from durable, waterproof and lightweight materials like rubber, neoprene or EVA. If you live in an area with a colder climate, it’s also a good idea to opt for rain boots that double as snow shoes or feature an insulated inner layer. If playing in cold, wet conditions then a lined boot will minimize cold toes or discomfort.
• Practicality and ease of use. Practicality is key when it comes to toddler rain boots. Shoes with treaded soles offer extra traction on slippery surfaces and minimize the risk of falls. You may be tempted to use rain boots as snow boots and vice versa. And while there are options that do both, the individual types are designed for different use cases. For starters, snow boots usually have more insulation and lining to keep feet warm in colder temperatures, while rain boots may be lined or may not be, as they’re designed for more moderate temperatures. While both types of boots have traction, snow boots usually have gripping, lug soles designed for icy and slipperier surfaces. Lastly, the materials used for each are different. Rainboots are often made of natural or synthetic rubber to ensure they’re waterproof, but still flexible enough to move around it.
