In a nutshell:

Based on expert advice and feedback from parents within The Bump community, we selected the SkipHop Farmstand Tummy Time Playmat as the overall best tummy time toy. It’s our top choice thanks to the textured elements, fun toys and built-in wedge pillow that provides additional comfort and support.

Shortly after bringing baby home from the hospital, you’ll want to start placing baby on their belly for brief periods of play time. Why? Because “tummy time,” as it’s called, is crucial to developing the muscular strength that supports key milestones like holding their head up and rolling over. And this daily routine should start as soon as possible. “It’s important to start doing tummy time on the floor before baby is a month old,” says Marielle Marquez, a pediatric occupational therapist and founder of Thrive Little. “The longer you wait to start tummy time on the floor, the harder it will be for baby and the more they will likely resist. The younger you start, the more they will be used to tummy time being a part of their normal routine.” The thing is, babies aren’t always huge fans of tummy time. And that’s where tummy time toys come in handy.
Toys for tummy time can help hold baby’s interest for longer and keep some of that fussing at bay, so you can enjoy some of your earliest moments playing together. Here, we’ll walk you through the importance of tummy time, what to look for and the best tummy time toys to choose from.

How We Chose the Best Tummy Time Toys

A good selection of toys will peak baby’s interest and make tummy time a joyful experience. And as you’ll be using them everyday, it’s important to choose wisely. To help you find the best tummy time toys our editorial team took the following steps:

  • We reached out to a pediatric occupational therapist and asked for her professional opinion on what to look for when choosing toys for tummy time.

  • We consulted expert sources such as The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and The National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD) to find out why tummy time is important for infant development.

  • We asked members of The Bump community to tell us about their kid’s favorite tummy time toy. And, as a mom of four, I have firsthand knowledge of many of the toys in this roundup.

  • Based on extensive research and my own personal experience as a parent, we chose products that are child-safe and easy to clean, as babies love to explore the world with their mouths.

  • Finally, because no two children are the same, we scoured forums and message boards and read user reviews to see how these tummy toys performed for a variety of families.

Editorial integrity is at the heart of everything we publish. Read about how The Bump develops and reviews all articles, including product reviews.

Best Tummy Time Toys to Shop

Overall best tummy time toy

Skip Hop Baby Tummy Time Playmat, Farmstand
Image: Amazon
What We Love
  • Soft, plush material
  • Built-in wedge pillow
  • Includes different toys and textures
Things To Consider
  • Some parents wish it was bigger

A play mat is a great option if you have hard flooring, and can be used right from birth, says Marquez. So it’s no surprise that this activity gym by SkipHop was selected as the overall best tummy time toy. Parents rave about the soft, cushy material that makes it a safe and cozy spot for baby to exercise their core muscles and burgeoning motor skills. But the star of the show is the built in wedge pillow, which your little one can use to prop themselves up in the early days or to rest their elbows on once they have increased head and neck control.

Aside from providing a soft spot to lounge, the mat features more than 10 farm-themed developmental activities, including a child-safe mirror, toys that crinkle, rattle and present different textures to make playtime as stimulating as possible. Mom of one Jaclyn, is a big fan of the various toys and says that her daughter “loves looking at herself in the mirror right now, so the mirror helps a lot to distract her when she starts to fuss” during floor time. Parents also athat it’s machine-washable and, when tummy time is over, the mat rolls up and can be carried by the handle for easy transportation and storage.

“We’re actually on the SkipHop right now! She loves tummy time when she’s on one of us, but on the floor it’s a bit trickier and having the wedge helps a lot. Right now we’re working on grasping and grabbing, so the SkipHop is perfect since the toys included have rings she can reach and grab for.”

Best multi-sensory tummy time toy

Melissa & Doug Ocean Tummy Time Triangle Baby Toy
Image: Melissa & Doug
What We Love
  • Crinkle paper
  • Includes child-safe mirror
  • Plush toy stand uprights or folds flat
Things To Consider
  • Less appealing to older babies

Let’s take a deep dive into this ocean-themed tummy time toy. Described as “velvety soft to the touch” this plush toy has tons of sensory elements including crinkle paper in the jellyfish tentacles, a crab with a squeaker claw and a hidden mirror. Mom of one, Amanda told us that although her 7-month-old daughter was a little too old to fully enjoy this toy, “she liked pulling and chewing on the fish and the tentacles” during tummy time.

Image: Amanda N.

The triangular toy can stand upright, meaning you can place it just within arms reach of baby during tummy time to encourage grasping skills. But the fun doesn’t stop there, it folds out into flat cloth panels, with colorful elements on one side and black and white illustrations on the reverse.

Age rating: 1 to 6 months | Batteries required: No

“I would buy this for a newborn or young baby because it’s low priced and good quality. It is several toys in one, having both high-contrast images and ones with bright colors as well as a mirror and other sensory features.”

Best light-up tummy time toy

Baby Einstein Glow & Discover Light Bar
Image: Amazon
What We Love
  • Engaging lights and sounds
  • Two volume settings
  • Suitable for tummy time and seated play
Things To Consider
  • Some parents say the floor stand doesn't stay upright

The Baby Einstein Glow and Discover Light Bar takes our pick for the best light-up tummy time toy. This versatile toy can lay flat for tummy time or be propped up on the floor in front of baby to stimulate their senses. As baby presses the large colorful buttons, it lights up, providing plenty of visual enticement. Although, mom of one Jennifer noted that younger babies may need help pressing the buttons at first. Jennifer said her 3-month-old daughter wasn’t able to use the toy independently, but thought that “by the time she is 5- or 6-months-old she will be able to and may be interested in the toy for longer durations.”

As the toy illuminates, classical melodies will also start to play for a healthy dose of auditory stimulation. Two volume levels and three different play modes—including music, animals and colors—ensure hours of entertainment. Plus, you can toggle between three languages for playtime in English, French or Spanish.

Age rating: 3+ months | Batteries required: Yes

“Although my daughter doesn't have an issue with tummy time (most of the time), it would be especially beneficial for a baby that dislikes tummy time. It provides enough entertainment to distract baby during tummy time and I like the different sound and language options for baby once they get a little older.”

Best tummy time water mat

Splashin'kids Inflatable Tummy Time Premium Water
Image: Walmart
What We Love
  • Durable construction
  • Squishy texture
  • Filled with six colorful floating toys
Things To Consider
  • Not suitable for newborns

Next up is this wibbly, wobbly wonder by Splashin’kids. “Slightly older babies with more acute vision are often enchanted by water tummy time mats, which can add an interesting element for baby and also can challenge their balance a bit,” explains Marquez who recommends this type of toy. There’s certainly something irresistible about a play mat that’s filled with water. The squishy texture adds an extra dimension to sensory play, while the floaty toys will fascinate infants and encourage them to press, push and explore. It’s also nice and roomy and is made from heavy duty PVC that holds up well over time.

Age rating: 3 to 18 months | Batteries required: No

We used the Splashin'kids Inflatable Tummy time Premium Water mat for our twins and they both loved it! We liked the size because it was big enough to put both of them on either end at the same time, but small enough that they could still reach their little arms as they got older and grasp for the floating pieces. - Kathy S., mom of twins

Bright Starts Tummy Time Prop & Play Activity Mat
Image: Walmart
What We Love
  • Large size
  • Machine-washable
  • Head props up and comes with a pillow
Things To Consider
  • Some parents say the mat is too thin

This adorable tummy time mat is nice and big, so baby has plenty of space to roll over, stretch and explore. The mat features five detachable toys—a mirror, rattle, textured teether and a plush toy with a hidden chime—so your little one will be captivated from the get-go. And, to make tummy time a little easier, you can prop up the polar bear’s head to bring the toys within batting distance. It even comes with a matching wedge pillow, which will help infants maintain a comfortable position while they’re practicing neck control. The plush material is super-soft and the mat is machine-washable, so you don’t have to worry about it getting grubby.

Age rating: 0 to 36 months | Batteries required: No

I got my best friend the Bright Starts activity mat (she’s due in 2 weeks). While we don’t have a ton of feedback yet, I do love how it folds up so compact for travel, which is something we both prioritize and want to continue prioritizing with our babies together. - Jaclyn B., mom of one

Best tummy time mirror

Sassy Tummy Time Floor Mirror
Image: Walmart
What We Love
  • Affordable
  • Great for visual stimulation
  • Tracker bee toy
Things To Consider
  • Some parents say it topples over easily

This tummy time mirror toy for baby is bound to be a favorite right from birth. The black and white design makes this toy suitable for even the youngest babies, since high contrast objects are easiest for newborns and their developing vision to spot. Plus, the cute bee and rattle ball are engaging for slightly older babies. The true reflection mirror cuts down on warping while providing a safe, unbreakable tummy time toy.

Age rating: 0+ months | Batteries required: No

Son absolutely loves this mirror. We set it down during tummy time and it doesn't topple over unless he hits it. It also attaches to the crib, which we like. The mirror picture is the clearest we found, which is why we got it. - sundaesprinkles, The Bump forum member

Best tummy time toy for older babies

Infantino Go gaga! Prop-A-Pillar Tummy Time & Seated Support
Image: Walmart
What We Love
  • Includes BPA-free teether toy
  • Good option for twins and older babies
  • Suitable for tummy time or seated play
Things To Consider
  • Base isn't cushioned

For older babies, tummy time may include sitting up, and possibly even stretching into a crawling position. That’s why an option that allows them to either sit up or lay down is the perfect tummy time toy for older babies. For this stage, we love this pick from Infantino. The colorful pal can be stretched out to use as a mat or coiled up to allow plenty of support for baby to practice sitting (it even has a security belt). It comes with two toys: a baby mirror and a silicone textured teether, which can be removed and repositioned depending on how you’ve arranged it.

Age rating: 6 to 12 months | Batteries required: No

We also had a stuffed toy to prop them up as they got bigger. We liked this one because it folded out to two spots so they could both use it at the same time! - Kathy S., mom of twins

Best interactive tummy time toy

Control Future Crawling Crab Baby Toy
Image: Amazon
Buying Options
Amazon|$19.99
What We Love
  • Lights up and plays music
  • Moves sideways like a real crab
  • Encourages baby to look up during tummy time
Things To Consider
  • Toy doesn’t crawl on carpet
  • No volume control

This crab tummy time toy skitters from side-to-side in a movement designed to grab babies attention. Meanwhile, its large eyes light-up and music plays as it moves. It works well for tummy time as your little one will exercise their neck muscles and grasping skills as they look up and reach for the toy. Worried about the crustacean going walkabouts? Built-in sensors ensure the little sea creature doesn’t bump into walls or disappear underneath furniture.

We’re also completely electronics free with her, but we made an exception for that ridiculous crab lol and she really does love it. - Jaclyn B., mom of one

Why Is Tummy Time Important?

Tummy time is basically a workout for baby—it engages key muscle groups and encourages gross motor skills that are necessary for baby to lift their head and master head control, roll over, sit up and crawl. According to NICHD the three main benefits of tummy time are as follows:

  • Strengthens muscles. Tummy time helps to “strengthen baby’s neck, shoulder and arm muscles so the baby can start to sit up, crawl, and eventually walk on their own.”

  • Aids motor skill development. Supervised tummy time can help improve baby’s ability to move and control their muscles to complete various actions.

  • Prevents flat spots on the back of baby’s head. Spending time on their tummy also helps avoid flat head syndrome.

Aside from the positive effects listed above, tummy time can also help alleviate gas pain and aid visual development. Plus, it’s a great way to bond with your baby!

What Makes a Good Tummy Time Toy?

When it comes to choosing the best tummy time toys, look for options that capture baby’s visual or auditory interest, or inspire baby to reach for them, thereby encouraging motor skills. If you do invest in a play mat, touch the material and consider how it’ll feel against baby’s delicate skin. As experts at the American Academy of Pediatrics point out “when your baby is on their tummy, the skin on their stomach, legs, arms and face touches the surface on which they are lying.” Once baby’s strength has developed and they’re starting to scoot or crawl, a tummy time toy that moves makes a great choice, as it encourages baby’s mobility early on.
