Edmund of Langley, born on June 5, 1341, was both the first Duke of York and the Duke of Cambridge. His parents were King Edward III and Queen Philippa of Hainault, and one of his brothers was Edward, Prince of Wales, who was also known as the Black Prince. Edmund took part in the Hundred Years' War between England and France, which England ultimately lost. He and his brothers went on to fight unsuccessfully for the French crown over many years. In 1372 he married Infanta Isabella of Castile, and they had three children. After his wife died, Edmund married Lady Joan Holland.
