Emery is a gender-neutral name of French, English, and German origins. First brought to England by the Normans, this moniker is a variant of the Germanic name Emmerich. Though its second element is certainly derived from the German word rih, meaning "ruler," Emery's em sound could come from several different places. Perhaps it arises from irmin, an element meaning "whole" or "great," creating the translation of "great ruler."
