Born on August 16, 1763, Frederick, the Duke of York, was the son of King George III and Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. He had a strong military career, moving up the ranks quickly. At 17 he was made a colonel in the British army by order of the king. In 1793, the prince, now a general, led British forces in an invasion of France. By 1803, Frederick was commander in chief of the Great Britain and Irish military and instituted a series of reforms that successfully helped defeat Napoleon in his bid to capture the United Kingdom. Frederick had a short-lived marriage and no children.
