While they might sleep through it as a tiny tot and not fully appreciate it until they're older, sweet Lorelai could eventually become as much of a Gilmore Girls fan as you are. A respelling of Lorelei, Lorelai is, of course, instantly recognizable as the name of the beloved TV series' protagonists, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, played by Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel. Though the mother and daughter duo share the same moniker, the younger Gilmore shortens her name to Rory.

With origins tied to a famous mythological story, Lorelai takes us on a journey from the fictional Stars Hollow, Connecticut, to the Rhine River in Germany. The name is said to be inspired by a rock headland found on the river called Lorelay. As legend has it, Lorelei spelled with an e is the name of a siren who lives on the rock and lures boaters in with her song. Indeed, monikers like Lorelai and Lorelei may derive from the Celtic word ley, meaning "rock," very fitting as Lorelai and Rory were each other's "rocks" in the series! Other sources link Lorelai to the definition of "murmuring rock," describing the echoing cries of the mythological Lorelei.
