Baby carrots are a favorite among busy parents-to-be and parents looking for a healthy, on-the-go snack. But before you bite into your next bowl of veggies, you’ll want to check that bag!

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently shared a warning to consumers after Grimmway Farms issued a recall for organic carrots potentially contaminated with E. Coli. So far, 39 people across 18 states have gotten sick from the same strain of E. Coli, and one person has died.

The recall affected several brands of baby and whole organic carrots sold in stores, from Whole Foods to Trader Joe’s, Wegmans and more. The affected brands include: 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Grimmway Farms, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O-Organic, President’s Choice, Raley’s, Simple Truth, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans and Wholesome Pantry.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has worked to pull all affected carrots from shelves, but it worries that the majority of recalled products were sold between 8/14/2024 and 10/23/2024 and are likely already in homes. You can see a full list of affected items with photos and labels to check at FDA.gov.

If you have purchased recalled carrots, the CDC encourages you to discard them and clean any surfaces or items that may have come in contact with the eggs. Pregnant people, young children and the elderly are more likely to contract severe illness from E. Coli than others. According to the CDC, E. Coli symptoms can show up in kids and adults in a matter of 3 to 4 days after eating affected food. Parents and parents-to-be should be on the watch for symptoms like severe stomach cramps, vomiting or diarrhea. If you or your child experiences these symptoms, don’t hesitate to reach out to your doctor.

You can see more information about the E. coli outbreak and how to keep your family safe at CDC.gov.
