Frozen waffles are a breakfast go-to for busy families—quick, easy, and beloved by even the pickiest eaters. But before you pop another one in the toaster, you’ll want to double-check the label.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of over 40 frozen waffle brands today, expanding on an earlier recall that affected around 25 brands. According to the organization the breakfast favorites sold under popular brands like Kodiak, Target, Publix, Walmart and more have been recalled due to possible Listeria contamination reported by the manufacturer, TreeHouse Foods, Inc.

The affected brands were sold all over the United States with potentially hundreds of families impacted. “My toddler ate one of the recalled waffles before I realized it was recalled, and I have a friend whose toddler ate several boxes of them before they realized… It’s scary how widespread this recall is,” Natalie G., a senior editor at The Bump and mom of one shared.

While, thankfully, there have been no reports of illness related to the recall yet, it’s important to stay vigilant. According to the CDC, people who are pregnant are 10 times more likely to contract severe illness from listeria (known as listeriosis) than non-pregnant people due to their weakened immune systems. Listeria can also pose a risk to young children, whose immune systems are still developing.

Once contracted, symptoms from listeriosis usually start within two weeks. While adults often experience mild flu-like symptoms—fever, fatigue and muscle aches—pregnant people and young children can experience more severe symptoms. In severe cases, Listeria can cause pregnancy loss or premature birth and can cause serious illness or death in newborns.

If you or your child have eaten a recalled product and are showing symptoms, it’s important to contact a doctor immediately—early antibiotic treatment can prevent complications. If you have unopened recalled products, the FDA urges families to discard them right away.

You can review all of the recalled brands at FDA.gov.
