Popular Child Carriers Sold at REI and Other Stores Recalled

Whether you’re hiking a trail, navigating a crowded city or just trying to get out the door with your hands free, a sturdy child carrier can be a game-changer. But if you’ve been relying on a Kid Comfort carrier to tote around your little one, it’s worth taking a second look. Over 5,000 of the popular packs, sold at REI and other major retailers, have just been recalled due to a potential fall hazard. Here’s what you need to know.

Why Are Certain Kid Comfort Child Carriers Being Recalled?

Deuter, the maker of Kid Comfort carriers, has issued a voluntary recall for several models in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). While the carrier is safe while worn, the hinges on the foldable rear kickstand support leg can crack or break when the carrier is set down, creating a fall risk. So far, Deuter has received 13 reports of broken hinges cracking and breaking. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

How Do I Know If My Child Carrier Is Affected?

The recall includes select Kid Comfort, Kid Comfort Pro and Kid Comfort Active models sold at Deuter.com, REI, Bass Pro and other retailers between March 2023 and March 2025. The affected carriers include those with the following lot model and production codes:

• Kid Comfort, model number: 3621221, color: maroon, production code last four: 0123
• Kid Comfort, model number: 3621221, color: forest, production code last four: 1223
• Kid Comfort Pro, model number: 3621321, color: midnight, production code last four: 0123
• Kid Comfort Active, model number: 3621121, color: teal, production code last four: 0423
• Kid Comfort Active, model number: 3621121, color: teal, production code last four: 1223

You can locate the model number on the back of the carrier. A production code is located on a tag inside the main storage pocket at the bottom of the carrier.

What should I do if I have a recalled Kid Comfort child carrier?

If your carrier is affected, stop using it immediately. Deuter is offering a free replacement carrier to all impacted customers. You can fill out a recall form on the Deuter website and print a prepaid return shipping label to return the product and get a new one.
